I understand that soy can be problematic, especially for people with thyroid problems, as it suppresses the functioning of the thyroid gland.

Tempeh, miso and fermented soy products are supposed to be all right, but soy drinks, yogurt and tofu and considered problematic, especially since most of them are allegedly genetically engineered.

All responses will be most welcome.

Genetic engineering of soy does not make it more problematic for IBS suffers or anyone else.

I know this sounds crazy, but are soy BEANS safe? I went to a Japanese place the other night, and you literally 'sucked' the bean from inside out to eat it. I didn't eat the actual 'skin'. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I just go by the fact that the Asians have been eating/drinking soy products for centuries and they are completely fine! In fact they are some of the healthiest people on the planet.

Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

Soybeans are a legume and they commonly eaten cooked. Unfortunately, I cannot eat them because they give me too much gas

Are you talking about green soybeans called edamame? They are immature soy beans and eaten like peas. I like them very much. They must contain a good deal of IF but are fine with SF for me (at least I think so; I'm planning a no soy test soon).

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
