I am trying to find a butter substitute that tastes good (to spread on bread, etc.) I can handle substitutes like smart balance light in cooking, or sauteeing veggies, etc., but I don't like the taste when it's by itself. Has anyone found anything that actually tastes good? I have been using regular country crock but I think it contains dairy so I should probably toss it. Thanks for the help!

Earth Balanced Whipped Spread is the best! It tastes great on bread and is vegan.

I actually found a dairy-free, low fat margarine that is available at any old grocery store - Becel RSF (Reduced Saturated Fat). It contains no dairy and only has 2.5 g of fat per serving (as opposed to 4 in Becel Light, or the whopping 8 or more in regular margerines). It comes in a deep pinkish-red container and is hard to miss in your margarine section.

I agree with maria love that butter!! Earth balance also makes sticks which are good for baking.

Thanks! My grocery store didn't have that but I'll have to look next time I'm at Whole Foods.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was a little worried about making our traditional potato rolls this Christmas with my family since they use a lot of butter, but maybe I can suggest the Earth Balance sticks this year. Can you tell a difference in baked goods or does it taste the same?
