Can they be used indefinitely without any long term side effects? Thanks.

According to my doctor they can. I do not use them every day but when I have to take certain medication that can cause constipation, such as when I use my antispasmodics or when I started my Lexapro or when I have to go on iron pills I used them. He informed me that all they do is pull the liquid into your stool and have a mineral oil type additive that helps the stools to become more "slippery". As a matter of fact, my pregnant friend takes them since her prenatal vitamin has iron and constipates her.

Usually stool softeners aren't recommended for a long time because they can become addictive (your muscles can get too weak and you won't be able to have a bm without a laxative). I recommend Magnesium (2 capsules before bedtime). Works like a charm.
