Hi everyone! I just found this site recently and have been on it everyday since! I have been dealing with IBS symptoms for a couple of years and was just diagnosed with it this last spring- around May '07- so I'm definintely new! I was just wondering if anyone could had any small bits of advice for dealing with IBS for a new member? Oh and I LOVE to cook/bake and try out new recipes-I love anything with peanut butter and ice cream ...Also, I have lost a considerable amount of weight due to trying to deal with IBS, so any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I just ordered two of Heather's books and am patiently waiting for them in the mail now!

Thanks so much and I can't wait to hear from you all! <3

Welcome to the Boards.

If you love to cook and bake you should definitely check out the IBS Recipes Board. Be sure to browse through the Recipe Index over there.

Peanut butter can be tricky for IBS - fat and IF - but a lot of IBSers find they can eventually handle it if they eat just a little with a good SF base.

As for ice cream, there are soy and rice ice creams and some of them are quite good. You really need to watch the fat content though - most of them are as high in fat as their dairy counterparts. So stick with a small amount after a low-fat, high-SF meal. There are even some recipes for making your own non-dairy ice cream on the Recipe board.

Here's a link to an old post I did. At the bottom you'll find a round-up of ice cream suggestions:

web page

This is a couple of years old now. I still love the Mocha Fudge but I've also grown to love Tofuti's Vanilla Almond Bark; Sharon's Sorbet Chocolate; and Soy Delicious Purely Decadent Peanut Butter Zig Zag (a double whammy for you).

Be cautious with these. They are all very high in fat and some contain milk proteins like casein or why which can be problematic for IBSers. I tolerate very small amounts of the milk proteins now but when I first started out I avoided them like the plague. If you're just beginning, I'd say satisfy your sweet tooth with stuff from the Recipe Board and leave the store-bought ice creams to celebrate with once you've stabilized a little.

Hi there, Paige, welcome aboard, and just like Wendy said, we're all in the same boat so we're all here working together to try to help each other stay afloat. *Grin*

I was never much of a cook myself, my mom and sis are more adept at it. They just have that inborn knack for cooking that I never picked up on or had. But since being diagnosed with IBS I've been trying to cook a regular meal at least once a day, and I fill in with easier foods in between.

I use the recipe index here found on the Recipe Exchange board, it's a wealth of interesting recipes, although I admit I haven't been able to try as many as I'd like to. It's a great resource too, helpful way to learn how to sub ingredients in other recipes that aren't already tailored to IBS. Heather's books are terrific too. I think you'll like them.

When it comes to soy ice cream, or soy anything, I've had to really say to myself "whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down, not so much!" because soy is quite fatty. I don't mind Tofutti Sour Supreme sour cream substitute and Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese cream cheese sub but holy cow are they fatty! (Heh, I made sort of a pun there, but not really lol). I've happily subbed half a cup of Sour Supreme in a recipe without thinking, and well, I chastised myself afterwards for not being more conscious of how much fat I was eating, and of course my tummy was angry with me too. Sure, soy is a nice substitute, but I have to take it in small doses. I usually don't eat more than 1/2 cup of soy ice cream, and I don't eat it every day. I can't afford it that often. The brand name my grocery store carries is either Soy Delicious or Soy Decadence or something like that... I've tried a Cherry Nirvana and another kind I can't remember the name but it had carob-covered almonds in vanilla soy ice cream. Both were quite good. I've also had Tofutti Li'l Cuties in vanilla. They are these little soy ice cream sandwiches and they are really good for being dairy-free. They are small, but actually I have never had the urge to eat more than one in a sitting, or in a day. I don't remember if I've tried any Rice ice creams yet.

I do like plain rice milk though. I even saw a recipe on this website I use (recipezaar.com) for homemade soy ice cream made without an ice cream maker. I haven't tried it yet, though, but it's gotten good reviews.

Anyway, I think you'll have a lot of success and fun experimenting with recipes and substitutions. If you come up with anything that works for you, don't hesitate to share it on the Recipe Exchange Board (pretty please because I'm not very inventive in the kitchen).

Take care and much luck to you.
