Well I have to have a tooth pulled (Ouch!). Since the tooth is infected the Dentist wants me to take antibiotics for 3 days before the extraction and 3 days following. She wants me to get the prescription from my M.D. because of the IBS (D) and the tendency of antibiotics to destroy gut flora thus diarrehia.

I've never had this type of problem when taking antibiotics, but I didn't have IBS either.

Any suggestions, experiences, medical factoids or antibiotics that may not cause me problems? Or do antibiotics affect motility/IBS???

Well, it sounds like your doctor really wants you to take the antibiotics. Are you really sure you have too? If so, then you definitely,.... I'll say it again,... definitely have to take probiotics at the same time. They are the opposite of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, bad and good. which leads to yeast overgrowth. Thereby, causing many yeast overgrowth symptoms. So, the probiotics put the good bacteria back in your gut and restore your bowel flora. However, be sure you buy a reputable brand (usually need to be refrigerated), and wait until 2 hours after your antibiotic dose before you take the probiotics. There should be at least a 2 hour wait. And don't let anyone tell you to wait until your antibiotic therapy is over before you take probiotics. My opinion, you're asking for trouble if you don't take the probiotics at the same time...at least 2 hours apart. Take care. Keep in touch with your procedure.

I experienced the very same thing 2 weeks ago. Yuck. Anyway, my dentist suggested soy yogurt. One little container a day. If you can tolerate it, try it. It worked for me.
