My daughter was diagnosed with IBS two years ago. She was away part of this summer. Heartburn got quite bad and now she is having 6 - 7 bowel movements every morning. She take citracell morning and night, eats a plain diet. Not sure how to help her.

Are you following the BTC diet on this website? That should help. Also, has your doctor prescribed any medication? I don't know what's OK for teenagers or not. At the very least, I would suggest immodium. I would also suggest that she sleeps at about a 45 degree angle and on her left side only. That helps decrease acid reflux while you sleep.

It really sounds like you need to go back to the doctor and get more help. Were all the proper tests done? There's a lot of terrific information on this website about things to try, things to avoid. A lot of the information we get from doctors is inaccurate. I found that switching over to this diet made me go from intolerable pain 24/7 to tolerable pain, which actually subsides at times and D that gets closer to "normal".

She pretty much does. she is at camp and luckly all meals are great for soluble fibers. it is more the mutliple bowel movements after breakfast that gets to her. she was on a somewhat regular 3 times each more but is now at 7. the heartburn is not too bad and she is on medication for that. she takes two citrocell each morning but I also read on here that she could take an immodeum before she eats breakfast. i can't tell if you could tkae the immodeum and then the citrocell? how to have both before breakfast or the citrocell right after a meal.

Hi there,

I have IBS-D and GERD (acid reflux) so I can totally understand where your daughter is coming from. One question for you -- how long ago did she start the acid reflux medication? The reason I ask is that some medications for GERD actually have diarrhea as a side effect. I have had acid reflux for 5 years now, and have switched medicines a few times. One of the times my doctor put me on Prilosec, and it made my IBS twice as bad. There are a couple different ones out there, and its a case by case basis to see which works the best for each person. For me, Prevacid doesn't cause side effects, so you might want to talk to your doctor.

In regards to the citrucel/immodium question, I take my soluble fiber usually with meals, so she could take it just before or with her breakfast. Immodium can be taken at any time, but if she wants to take it as a prevetative, she might want to take it a bit before breakfast. There are also many other options to help with her symptoms -- things like probiotics, perscription medication, and alternative therapy. If you do a search on the boards for these things, you will come up with a lot of posts that people have written. Anyway, I hope some of that helps. Let us know how she is doing -- it must be tough for you as a mom to see her hurting and not being right there with her at camp. Good for you asking questions and trying to figure this out!

She's been taking medication for heartburn for two years. Nexium seems to be the best. She actuallly was doing great up until this summer that we switched her to Zantax 75 or 150. I'm concerned with her being on the other types being a teenager. I told her to take the Citrocel (two tablets) first and then take the Imodeium (half tablet). Also to increase her Citrocell before bed to two tablets. How much soluble do you take and how do you spread it out over the day? Any foods that really work well for you? Her stomach hurts after each meal though it is only after brekafast that she goes (now 7 times). I'm trying to figure out how to get that back to her normal three. Thanks for responding. It is hard.
