I haven't been on the site in a while but I have posted in the past. I've had IBS for two years now (or at least I've been told its IBS) and I finally found something that did help me for a bit. My doctor prescribed Citalopram for me and after taking one a day for two to three weeks, I finally started feeling relaxed in my body, and I was going to the bathroom with out too much trouble. My body was still on this terrible cycle of going to the bathroom every two hours (including when I'm trying to sleep) but it was helping break that. But after about 5 months the drug doesn't seem to be working anymore ~_~ Does anyone know why Citalopram would even work in the first place for IBS? And does anyone know something more powerful?

Some other questions:

1. One thing that may sound odd, is that I rarely ever stand up to pee anymore (I'm a guy). I think it's because I go to the bathroom so much (normally every two hours) that my body never just "needs" to just pee. Is this part of IBS?

2. Does anyone ever wake up in pain over IBS? Like I said, my Citalopram was breaking that cycle, but now that its worn off or I have gotten used to it, my body is acting up again and is hurting me.

Some other things about me that contribute to what I think is IBS that I have:

1. Coffee - If I ever drink coffee, in about an hour I will have a burning feeling my guts and the need to pee very badly. This will go on for a couple days. and eventually coffee/ maybe caffeine just makes me constipated

2. Fast food of any kind - If I do try to eat this, just like the coffee I will get pain near my bladder and guts, and I will become constipated for almost a week, having to go to the bathroom more the usual with a lot of mucus.

Anyway I just wanted people to know what my status is and if they can tell me if they've heard of anyone with IBS with some of those symptoms I mentioned. And also about a more powerful drug then citalopram because its the only thing in medicine I have found in the two years of IBS that has worked for me.

hi, i'm also on citalopram, it has helped alot to calm me down, but with ibs, what works best for me is a combination of medicine and diet, if you stay away from trigger foods you should be okay, but maybe you should keep a food diary and also get tested for gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance and fructose malapsorbtion. This is what I have done and now feel a million times better, especially since i cut out dairy! I hope you figure things out and feel better, good luck

Thanks for the comments! I have been checked for celiac, but not for the others. actually wanted to get tested for dairy but my doctor told me there are no longer tests that will let you see if you are or not. By the way, with citalopram how much do you take? Can you take more then one a day?

tama_chan, welcome back... it is not typical to be awakened out of sleep with IBS symptoms.

I just wanted to say that my IBS would wake me up in the middle of the night with awful pain. I actually went to the ER twice for it before I was diagnosed with IBS. I think mine is from severely trapped gas. Every time it happens I feel like I am going to die. But it hasn't happened since I started following Heather's plan 2 months ago!

Let me add to just a couple of your questions ... When I have a flare up it has, and does wake me up with cramping and pain.

And I rarely stand to urinate anymore ... it just makes it nicer for my wife, and grandfather used to say that a true gentleman will always sit down unless you just got off your horse after a hard ride and you're in the middle of nowhere.
