Eating disorders and IBS

Has anyone here with IBS had an eating disorder earlier in life? I was wondering if there was a connection between the two.

Laxative abuse and bulimia when I was 14-15; can't remember having digestive problems before that but I definitely had problems with the idea of food being inside my body! I remember the first time I saw a doctor about constant stomach pains she asked me the same question. But when I told her I think she just raised her eyebrows. Sometimes I wish having IBS didn't involve constantly thinking/worrying/planning about food... but we can't have it all!

I also wonder that myself sometimes. I went through a period of laxative abuse as well as bulimia during my teen years and wonder if that has played a role in my IBS. I know for a fact it did get worse throughout my teens as I got older, but whether or not the two are related is unknown to me.

Hello,
I'm brand new to the board, and was anorexic in my youth and adolesence. I'm not sure if there was a connection and I've never thought about it until I read your post. Would be interesting to know if there was some connection between the two.

Interesting ..I had wondered the same thing. I was both bulimic with laxative abuse and anorexic as a teen. There should be a study about this to see if there is a relationship. Thank you for suggesting this idea.
