I have IBS-C and was advised by a nutritionist to take magnesium citrate. I find it very helpful.

Yes, you do gradually up the dose, as it depends on how much your body reacts with it. I take a supplement that has 150mg magnesium per tablet. The recommended dose is 1-3 tablets. I take 2-3 tablets at night, depending on how C I am. But - I have just started taking a calcium magnesium supplement, too, which also has 150mg magnesium per tablet, so I would take one calc/mag tablet with food early evening, then 2 tablets of mag citrate before bed. I don't exceed the recommended dose.
I take it every night, but it doesn't work like a laxative and guarantee a BM next day. Sometimes, it takes longer, depending on diet, hormones etc. But it is very gentle and I think, as it acts as a muscle relaxant, helps with the pain.

thanks so much for replying. Why do you take a calcium supplement as well? I see quite a few people on here that take both mag and cal, is there a specific reason why?

I take a calcium supplement because I don't eat any dairy products - they are all triggers - and indeed haven't done for years, as I have an allergy to dairy anyway. I don't use calcium enriched rice or soy milk as I don't like the taste - I use the plain varieties - so I don't want to become calcium deficient - especially at my time of life (46)!
