I had soy milk for the first time yesterday (which was also my first day on this diet although I started mid-day when I found the website). I was having gas issues that night which I rarely have, and the only thing I could think of that I don't normally eat was the soy milk. Has anyone else had trouble with it?

I have gas trouble with too much soy as well. I do not drink the soy milk at all.

Do you drink anything else instead? I didn't realize there was anything in soy milk that can do this - does anyone know what particular ingredient(s) might be the culprit?

I think it's because soy milk is made from soy beans, which contain a sugar that can be hard for the body to break down - I think it's called raffinose??
If you are new to soy, I think it takes time for your body to adjust to digesting it. If you find you can't tolerate it, you could try rice milk or almond milk.

It causes me a bit of gas, too, but I drink it anyway. As long as you start with small abounts like 3/4 cup, no more, you might get accustomed to it. I try not to drink it cold, and I drink it slowly or use it in a smoothie with rice.

I would like to try the almond milk, but right now I do drink Lactaid. I am very lactose intollerant but buy the 100% fat free lactaid with enriched calcium. I also use rice cheese and butter etc instead of the soy products. They do make milk as well.

Lactaid is still dairy and should not be consumed. The problem is not only the lactose in milk. It contains proteins that are harder for your tummy to process. If you want to stablize, you should completely take it out of your diet.

Hi Gracie,
I am sorry about the post on Lactaid; I am still new to all of this and thought that since it was lactaid free then it was far better than regular milk. I have been starting to feel better and didnt realize that there was other things in the lactaid milk that could be affecting me. I put it in my cereal a few times a week and I have been feeling alright after having it. I have a very hard time with soy products...what would you suggest to be the best thing for me?

No need to apologize. I have a hard time with soy products too, so for milk substitutes I have either Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milk, or Rice Dream.

Gracie, Thank you for your reply. Not to continue on the subject, but If i can ask you a few more questions regarding the milk....
I have been trying to find information regarding both Almond milk and Rice milk and I am finding a lot of info that states that rice milk is higher in both carbs and sugar. I have always been very healthy and used to drink non-fat milk. Does either the Almond or rice milk come in a fat free version? Do you know which is supposed to be healthier, the almond or the rice?
Thank you so much for your help! Abby

Yes, both are higher in sugar and carbs. I haven't seen any fat free versions, but it doesn't means they don't have it. I don't have the milk everyday, and i don't have large portions so the higher sugar and carbs haven't been much of an issue for me.

Which do you recommend for cereal, almond or rice?

My absolute favorite is the almond milk. Also for a nice treat, the chocolate is sooo yummy!

I haven't tried the rice milk yet, but almond has a great texture for cereal. I had the vanilla flavored kind and I didn't really notice any flavor other than the cereal. Good luck!

I personally drink soymilk everyday and I'm IBS-C and I find it helps reduce that crampy feeling in your stomach first thing in the morning. Although, I limit myself to only 4 oz of soymilk everyday. I find soymilk as a great replacement for milk. Rice milk makes me more C.

Maybe I'll try it again. It was my first day on the diet so it could be any number of things. I've fallen in love with almond milk, but I have some soy yogurt and other products (is there anything they haven't tried to make out of soy??)

Gracie,
Thank you for all of your advice in regards to the milk. Last night I spilled out the lactaid milk and bought my very first soy milk. I deided to start small an bouugh just plain, or original flaver. I used it in my cereal this morning, so hopefully now without the dairy I can continue to get better.
Thanks again, Abby
