I'm really glad to have found this website and I am hopeful that I can finally stop being sick every day. But I'm so overwhelmed by all the changes! Not just seemingly every kind of food that I like, but diet coke, diet sprite, black tea, etc. I know it seems lame to be so attached to things like that but they seem like some of the small things that help me get through the day. I'm scared because I've been advised to do south beach diet type diets because of my PCOS and insulin resistance, and the advice of this diet is almost the complete opposite. At this point I'm more concerned with not being sick than losing weight, but I don't want to do any permanent damage to my body. Has anyone else been through this? How do you deal? TIA for the support - I really need it right now.

I am new to this diet, too, and while I don't have the other health problems as you (insulin resistance), I am adjusting quite well to "giving up" some foods. And after almost 2 months--I'm definitely improving!

I still have black tea in the mornings, but gave up coffee, which I have been drinking for over 35 years. That was the big one for me.

The dairy hasn't been too painful to give up--suggestions from people on this board are great. I now use Silk (plain, soy) Creamer, rice milk, soy milk, and different cheese substitutes.

As far as the starchy foods go--the soluble fiber ones like white rice, pasta, bread, etc.--I guess you'll have to use your doctor's guidance. But you can use those foods sparingly. I use some white rice for desserts, and the rest brown rice. The actual quantities don't have to be that much--maybe it won't be too much different than what you're eating now.

The big difference for me is that now I'm not eating nearly as much fat or oil for cooking, and I'm actually losing weight! THAT feels really good.

I don't know what the South Beach Diet is, but I think you will gain benefit from the IBS diet guidelines here. You will modify them to suit your own body's needs, but it's a good starting place.

Yes, it is a big change! Before reading Eating For IBS, I was following the Atkins diet. However, there comes a point where you have to decide, do you want to be thin or do you want your life back. I've been following the diet on this website since January (falling off the wagon here or there) and have been feeling great! However, I am back to my highest weight ever. Since this diet has given me my energy back, I trying to really focus on working out alot to help control the weight gain.
Oh, yeah, you can keep the black tea! I tend to stick to decaf, so I can drink more of it without getting a bladder infection, but I drink it hot and cold all day long.

It is hard to give up the things we love to eat. I've been on this diet for 2 1/2 months. For me, the hard thing to give up was cheese. I thought that coffee would be hard, but I substituted peppermint tea for the times I would usually drink coffee, and that helped. I think, for me, the act of sitting down with a hot mug was more comforting than what was in the mug. Does that make sense?

Anyway, I can honestly say that I lost the cravings for some foods the longer I went without them. Try to find some safe foods that you really love and can have when a craving for a trigger food hits. You will feel much better when you eliminate the trigger foods from your diet. Because of your insulin resistance, you will probably need to reintroduce veggies quickly. Look at the list of safe foods on this website and check it against the diet the doctor gave you. You should be able to find some foods that you can start with, and branch out from there.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I know what you mean about the routine of drinking coffee/tea - sometimes we just want to go through the process we're comfortable with, and we can "trick" our bodies by making small substitutes. If only that could work for diet coke! (Although the iced tea suggestion migh work...)
