Hi everyone. There seems to be a lot of good info here. I have had what seems to be IBS for years, but it's been worse over the past 18 months or so. Most days I can live with it, but I have days where it's hard to think about much else.
I have really bad bloating despite a generally good diet and lots of exercise. Based on what I've read so far, I might want to ditch the Metamucil my doctor suggested (which hasn't helped much) and try acacia instead.
Here's my question: I read in the research library here that IBS is often worse for women during our periods. For me, though, it seems to be at its worst a week or so BEFORE my period. I'm wondering if others have a similar problem.
BTW, I am 45 and starting to have much lighter periods, if that matters! And I am still on BC pills, but I have been on them forever and they don't seem to have bothered me.

I notice that, a little... I don't consistently have IBS problems every month anymore, but when I do have bad days, they seem to happen a couple days before my period starts. I'd say what you're experiencing is completely normal. Everyone's IBS - and cycle - is a little different, so symptoms aren't necessarily going to line up exactly with the start of a period.
Also, I've noticed the pattern changing as I get older. (I've had IBS since I was a child.) I had no IBS symptoms at all with my period until I was in my early 20s, and then the worst problems seemed to happen the first couple days. Two or 3 years ago, it switched to being a few days before. All normal.

Hi Julie-
I read your post & can totally relate! I am miserable the week before my period-also seems to hit a few days before I ovulate. I've talked to my GI doc (a woman) and she couldn't quote a study, but said I am not alone in this.

I was a having a really hard time with attacks during my period as well as unusally painful stomach cramps. Something I hadn't had in 10 years. I went to my dr. and she gave me a prescription for an antimflammatory (wrong spelling) i think it's naproxin??? don't quote me on it. Anyways it works to control the stomach cramps and also lowers your protogladins (again sorry for the spelling)which can cause the imbalance in your system which lead to an attack. I start taking them about one day before my period every six hours, they are magic pills...I have no cramping and havn't had an attack during my period since starting them I still don't feel 100% butit has definitley been a great thing for me.
