Hi guys-

I'm very new to all of this & having been following Heathers' diet religously except one day (with horrific consequences). I am taking a 1/2 tsp acacia two times a day & the peppermint capsules. I am stil struggling with really bad gas & bloating & C-any suggestions?

I asked earlier, but no one answered. Where do you get Natural Calm and what form does it come in? Is it one of Heather's products I've overlooked? Please reply. I could use the help.

Is it a laxative, or is it for the gas as well?

It's a magnesium citrate powder supplement. You add it to a cup of hot water and drink it like tea. You can find it at some HFS (Whole Foods, Wild Oats), or you can order it online. I take it every night and it's WONDERFUL!

Magnesium is a natural laxative. I found that it did help a little with gas only because it helps get things moving. Gas builds up when things move too slowly.

If you have C then you have gas to go with it. It will take some time to get the acacia to help out with the c but it will happen. I'm up to 1 tsp 3x a day and life is pretty great already. I've been using it for 2 weeks. I use Miralax for the c and have been for a couple of years now. It's been my saving grace as it's not habit forming and doesn't alter your rhythm internally. I hope to be able to quit using it as the acacia does it's job. Try Fennel tea- lots of it. You can also chew on a few seeds after you eat. It freshens your breath, helps gas and digestion. I make fennel tea alone or I add anise to it. I buy it in bulk at the health food store and grind it a bit before putting a few pinches in the hot water. Simethacone tablets like Gas Ex...could be helpful for faster relief.

If you're thinking of Milk of Magnesia, absolutely not! It's way more gentle. You start with a small dose (~1 tsp) in the evening, and increase by 1/2-1 tsp per day until your BMs are of a regular, soft consistency. It might take a day or two at first to kick in, but after that, once you find the right dose, you should have no problem having a BM every day. Right now I take 1 tablespoon every day, but I think I need that much because my AD makes me a little C. As you are increasing your IF with the diet, you should (theoretically) need less of the Natural Calm.

Good luck!

Just wanted to clarify something here. The acacia is not exactly what "cures" C; it's the fact that the acacia allows you to eat more IF (and less SF). It's the IF that helps you "go".

Fennel seed capsules, you can get at the health food store. Mine is from a company called solaray.

Be warned. the natural calm is very salty tasting. If you are going to take it,dissolve in a little bit of hot water then add grape juice or something with a heavy flavor to mask the salt taste of the natural calm.
Good luck, IBS-C stinks.

Thanks. This all a bit overwhelming & there is so much info/suggestion out there. I ordered the Natural Calm online & will see how it goes.

Does the fennel help the gas or the C?

It can help both in a way. It is an antispasmodic herb and helps increase the gastric juices for better digestion. It does help with the gas and if your gut isn't cramping that will help the C. If you like something a little sweet after dinner you can get sugar coated fennel seeds in the Indian/Asian section of some grocery stores. Swad is a brand name I find most. You just chew a small amount. Indian restaurants generally give them to you after a meal or they have a bowl by the door.

Good luck! I think you will like it. You can increase it fairly quickly, so don't be afraid to jump from 1 tsp to 2 tsp in one day. It's not like the acacia where you have to go very slowly. Keep us posted!

Another example of how everyone's different. I think the NC tastes sweet and fruity. Definitely not salty! Are you taking one of the flavored kinds?
