I'm new to these boards! I am suspecting that I have IBS: in the past few months I've had some weird abdominal twinges in the lower right and left abdomen, and for a long time I've had loose stools and upset stomach, especially starting the 2nd-4th day of my menstrual cycle. I started the IBS diet about 6 weeks ago, including acacia fiber (1/2 tsp twice a day). I also started exercising. My stomach has been much better, although I still have loose stools occasionally. The problem is that I've missed my period this month, or at the very least, it's 3 or 4 days late so far. I should mention that I breastfeed my daughter (she is 3), but I've been having regular periods for the past 18 months, so I don't know if the breastfeeding has anything to do with it. I took two pregnancy tests, and they were negative. I'm wondering if any of you experience missed periods with IBS, or if you've missed or had a late period/change in cycle when you start a fiber supplement and the IBS diet? Thanks!

Hi, and welcome!

IBS and fiber supplements should not affect your menstrual cycle. Have you been diagnosed with IBS by a doctor? If not, please talk to your doctor about all your symptoms. Heather provides a lists of illnesses that need to be excluded before you can be diagnosed with IBS: Diagnosis and Tests

well i have always had problems with my ibs and my periods, and they started getting messed up together at age 16. my periods stopped and my bowels went haywire! my periods r back to normal because of hormone contraception, but not sure what they'd b like without it! i think they both started cos of stress, but i find them linked ie. always getting ibs when im on my period. i went to a chinese doctor who told me that the 2 were linked, but not sure if thats true! so could b a link, but if only started since you get better than may not b, although a change of diet, loss of weight, stress, exercise can all effect your cycle!
