Hi,

I had a question for anyone with reflux along with IBS. I've searched the posts quite a bit and have found mixed reviews about different type of GERD meds and their side effects. Some people have said they get D as one from certain meds, others not so much. I am currently on Prevacid and I know it definitely helps my reflux. I don't think it is causing me more D, but I am not sure. Is there anyone out there who takes this type of med (lansoprazole) and find that it actually helps your IBS symptoms? I mainly ask because I have to take a H.pylori breath test next week, and my doctor told me I couldn't take my prevacid, and as a result my IBS symptoms seem to have been worse the last couple days. Could the extra acidity be causing more D and gas? Sorry, for the long post, IBS is a never-ending mystery Thanks!

Hi,
I live in Canada so our med names are different but I take Pariet (rabeprazole) for my GERD. I was on Ranitidine (precription dose of Zantac) until last summer. I had an endocscopy done and when the GI Specialist asked what I take now and I said Ranitidine, she was shocked and said I should not take that because it is known to cause D in alot of people??? The Pariet has been great for me now though.
I have been diagnosed with colitis so I might be slightly different from you in some regards but I do find that I get very bad D when I have forgotten to take my GERD medication. It makes sense because in my opinion the stomach acid that your body is used to having neutralized is now aggravating your stomach and breaking down food differently. The stomach acid could also cause irritation and inflammation in your digestive system = unpleasant D
Not sure if this helps or answers your questions but this is what I have experienced.

Whew,
I thought it was just me w/ IBS-D. lactose intolerant and GERD....I did a search on GERD and read your post, how did the hpylori test go? I came up negative (this time, had a positive many years ago) but have had nothing but problems w/ my GERD since my double whammy of an endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time. They switched me to Nexium which they say takes a long time to start working and I'm miserable....what do you currently take for your GERD? Do you find it hard to find recipes cause your also lactose intolerant like me? Thanks for any info

I have reflux as well and started taking Nexium back in March. My doctor started me on Prilosec first (Insurance insisted) but it did nothing for me. I would say 99% of the time the Nexium has worked great. No side effects anymore and the nausea has stopped, too. Only when I am really stressed out, does the heartburn rear it's ugly head. I did have severe headaches for the first few weeks. The tough thing I am finding is figuring out which foods to eat that don't mess with one end or the other.

I am on Prevacid for my GERD. I tried stopping it for awhile, thinking it made no difference, but I think I'm wrong there. I have absolutely no side effects at all. I started it up about a month ago, and am now following Heather's tips on eating SF and walking after dinner each night, which helps me tons since all my attacks are at night.

Hey Sj -

I am getting the results of my H.Pylori test today from my doctor, so I'll let you know if it came back positive or negative (I have a feeling negative, but we'll see). I've had GERD for over four years now, and when I first started they put me on Nexium. That worked, but the side-effect was that I burped a ton. Over the summer, I got switched to Prevacid, which I really liked, not as much burping. Then I switched doctors in January and when I went to renew my reflux prescription, she switched me to Prilosec. That was the worst one for me, I'm convinced it made my D worse. Luckily, a month ago I called her and told her I wanted to go back to Prevacid. So that's what I am on now, and I think it helps my IBS in the fact that there isn't as much acid to make my stomach as "angry" as it was before. And it is certainly effective for reflux symptoms.

In terms of recipes, I substitute a lot. This website and the recipe index have been life-savers, along with the tips from Heather's books. I am currently reading "Eating for IBS" and I highly recommend checking it out (I got the copy through my local library network). Basically, I utilize rice or soy milk in a lot of my baking and cooking. My dad's proud of me -- I've been cooking so much more for myself lately, hehe. Anyway, that's what has been slowly helping me. I've only been on the diet for a little over a month, and I know it takes a lot longer to get stable, so I'm trying to take it one step at a time. I hope that helps and sorry I rambled a bit

Julie

I take Nexium and have had no ill effects from it. I'm only taking a 1/2 dose right now because I'm pregnant but normally, the GERD would be unbearable now...and it's held it off! Love that stuff!

Hi Julie
You sound like me! I am IBS d and lactose intolerant. I was also om Previcid for about 7 years. Sometimes it helped sometimes not. I switched to another med ( can't remember the name) and again sometimes good and sometimes not. I stopped all GERD meds about 3 months ago. I had read that there were some could be some other health issues in people who used these meds long term so I decided to try an experiment. I stopped and I feel fine. I very occasional heartburn but an OTC med works fine. This is just my experience so please check with your doctor before you do anything.

I used Prilosec on and off for awhile and it worked. Within days of going off of it, GERD symptoms would return. Then, my doc started me on Nexium which has been WONDERFUL - until I surprised myself by finding out last week that I am pregnant. So, I stopped the Nexium and 50 mg Zoloft immediately. My gp said it is okay to stay on both but, after two healthy daughters, I had a miscarriage in 2004 and don't want to regret anything if I lose this one, too. Back to the Nexium - I did not notice any side effects. In fact, I was able to eat more foods like oranges (at the end of a meal). Between being in my 6th week of pregnancy at age 39 and going off the Nexium, I have to say I have been miserable again. Also, my abdominal distention has returned. I didn't burp at all on the Nexium. Also, because the Nexium dealt with my GERD, I was able to focus more on IBS triggers. My IBS seemed so much better on the Nexium. I have no idea how it could help IBS. Perhaps my GERD has just been worse than my IBS. Of course, anything could happen now. I hope my ob (first visit is not for 4 more weeks) approves going back on Nexium once I get through the first trimester. I will be able to eat a more varied diet without GERD trouble.

Sorry I rambled - good luck to you!

Hi. I am IBS-A (used to be D), lactose intolerant and heartburn. I take Prevacid. For a time when my IBS was really bad, I was taking it in the morning and at night. Prior to that, I didn't think I really needed it, the occassionally forgotten pill didn't seem to do anything. But when my IBS got bad again, boy howdy could I tell a difference. Even missing one pill makes me miserably nauseous. I don't know how else it affects the IBS other than definitely on a stress level. Being that nauseous and not sleeping well certainly can worsen the IBS. I've been on the diet a little over 3 weeks now. Am only taking Prevacid once a day. I have no plans to go off it anytime soon.
