Hi,
I have seasonal allergies. Due to the warming trend I've had what I believe are sinus headaches. I was holding off but am going to probably take Claritin or a similiar anti-histamine.
My reservation was due to a fear this would worsen my symptoms of C.
I wanted to know, do anti-histamines have a negative effect of IBS, C, or should I take and not worry?
Thanks.

Have you tried an air purifier?

I finally decided to get one because I don't like taking meds and a few months of allergy meds cost the same as the purifier we got. I've had the purifier for a couple of weeks now and I haven't needed anything for my allergies.

Read what the possible negative side effects are for you med. Even if the list a GI symptom it does not mean you would have gotten it without IBS or with it.

I live in Florida, right now the temps have been in the 80's and the patio is filled with green pollen dust. Like you after this IBS flare got going, I hesitated before taking my Allegra-D. I waited for days to get stable enough to even take 1/2. So through it I sneezed my head off, struggled with red, watery eyes, etc.

Then last week I just took my usual pill at night as always and one again the next morning. There was no problem for me. If you don't try, you won't know. Why suffer?

Not sure about antihistamines, but sudafed makes my C worse. Have you thought about a nasal spray like Nasarel instead? Those might have less of a systemic affect.

I use Astelin antihistamine nasal spray, and it works like a charm for me.

I've never had a problem with OTC Claritin.

Claritin never mentioned GI problems like C on any of the research I did, I take it then it's fine.

I had a bunch of sinus headaches recently. Hate those.

Benedryl works fine
Claratin works fine
No problem with Allegra

I get problems with sudafed, but that's because of the stimulant they put in it.

Benedryl's still my favorite. I cut them in half for a little sore throat, or take one before bed so I can breathe better while I'm sleeping. They're great for drying up phlegm too, and i swear by them if I'm getting on a plane so my ears don't pop (which I will be doing in 2 1/2 weeks!).

Good luck!

I use Reactin. I've used Claritin without a problem. Allegra was effective as well. I also use nasal sprays successfully (I have such evil hayfever that my M.D. prescribes all this stuff for me). Benadryl is wonderful, too.
