My doctor said it takes 3-4wks to take effect. I'm not sure if that's an exact thing for me, as I had completely eliminated certain triggers from my diet long before seeing the doctor. I waited 4wks before testing the results. At the 4wks mark, I was able to eat all the old triggers that I hadn't been eating for over 8 years.

I have been taking amitriptylene (which I think is the same as Elavil) for 4 weeks at 10mg a night. I think that I am just beginning to notice a difference in that pain attacks are not so severe and don't last as long. My GI dr wants me to take it for 6 months and then review, and I am supposed to gradually increase to 25mg as tolerated. I am not sure why he prescribed this particular AD as I am IBS-C, and C is a side effect. I have had to increase Acacia to 4 tablespoons and eat as much IF as I dare to counteract this. I have noticed an increase in palpitations, but I have them anyway as I have a benign heart murmur.

Next week, I am hoping to increase to 15mg in the hope that it will have an effect on the excruciating IBS pain I have for a week or more round period time.

I will keep you posted on results.
