It's been about 8 years since I've had a sigmoidoscopy, and at that time the doctor gave me 2 enemas in the office and did the test right after. I have a different doctor now, and I have to do the 24 hour liquid fast, followed by the gallon of whatever-the-heck it is. Is that necessary for a sigmoidoscopy? I'm not looking forward to this, since D is a problem for me anyway and I'm too skinny to lose any weight.

Yes it is necessary. Your colon needs to be empty for the docs to do this procedure.

When I had my colonoscopy done, I only got through about a third of that gallon of nasty stuff. Uck! When I told them that, they seemed surprised that I made it through that much of it. Unfortunately, you do have to have your system cleared out for any of the "oscopies". Have you ever had a colonoscopy done? That's the only one that allows them to see/check your entire colon.

It's been awhile since I had mine too...but I did have to fast for at least a day. I also did have to take some type of laxative and two enemas at home. I'd much rather do that at home than have the doctor give me one personally.
