I was wondering if anyone has an idea on whether chocolate or smoking cigs. is worse for IBS. Yes, I realize they're both bad but I'm having a very difficult time giving up all of my vices.

Well, smoking can actually kill you and those around you, so kick that bad vice first.

Chocolate, as in chocolate bars, is bad because of the fat connected to it. And caffeine is connected to the fat.
But, you can use cocoa powder to make all kinds of chocolate things to satisfy cravings.
And yes, tobacco in any form is an IBS irritant also.

I quit smoking almost 4 weeks ago. I went from IBS-D, which I've had for probably around 14 years (last 5 years have been pretty bad), to mostly IBS-C in those 4 weeks. Hope not TMI, but I had bursts of smelly gas for about 3 weeks, which really freaked me out. I think I'm finally starting to get past the C a little, but the degree that nicotine was affecting my IBS has astounded me. I smoked for 27 years (quit once for 3 years many years ago). Please quit - it's killing your IBS.

I often have a piece or two of dark chocolate after a meal.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
