Has anyone conquered bloating?

I removed soy, wheat, dairy, soda, gassy veggies, etc.

I walk everyday.

I eat small meals.

I drink fennel tea and semithicone.

I take a digestive enzyme, peppermint capsules, and I stopped all SFS....but still the bloating is so horrendous it hurts to even wear clothes. I feel like so fat even though I'm not. I look horrid and I can't even stand to look at myself anymore. I can't find clothes that feel okay or look okay.

Can anyone help with some insight and ideas? I'm IBS-C.

Thanks

I found I had to remove digestive enzymes from my diet. They were giving me gas and bloating. I think this maybe due to the fillers used in the tablets/capsules which are primarly IF such as cellulose. Also, I found that I had to remove all herbal preparations from my diet too because they were mainly ground plant material composed mostly of IF. I need a very low IF and very high SF diet.

Are eating low fructose food?

FYI - an interesting thing happened to me during my discovery of triggers and irritants. For many years I thought I was IBS-C. Once I got my diet sorted out in particular the ratio of IF to SF, fat/oils, food additives, lactose and fructose I found I was IBS-D with some C so I call myself IBS-A

Maybe the fennel tea doesn't work for you. It didn't work for me. I would say check out the tea section at your HFS and try something else. Look for something that's geared towards digestion or gas & bloating. Chances are it will contain fennel, but it will also contain other things that might help better.

Which SFS have you tried? I think this is what really did it for me. And have you thought about giving the hypno a shot?

I have never conquered bloating long term. I am especially bad all winter. I am better if my clothes are very loose and if I walk around a lot and pass gas as needed. If I could be alone and have access to a bathroom whenever I needed without any time constrictions, I might be bloat free. The fennel tea does help me but has not cured me. I also get bloated if I have to pee and don't or if I don't drink enough. I take a large dose of acacia everyday and I did feel better when off of wheat. I also wish I could eat everything really slowly but that is not who I am. I hope some of this is helpful.

Have you tried doing more vigorous exercises other than walking? It may get things going with the bm's, gas, and bloating.
The time when I was mostly gas and bloat free was when I didn't eat any breads or pastas.

This would be really rare, wouldn't it? This is the first time I've heard digestive enzymes causing such problems. How did you pinpoint it to this???

I do eat mostly low fructose. It doesn't seem to matter.

How did you get your SF when you removed bread and pasta?
Do you still avoid them?

I can't think of anything more vigorous than walking at this time. Can't afford a gym membership...but I think swimming would help.

Thanks for the idea.

Thanks Lisa Marie. I do drink peppermint, chamomille and also Eaters Digest which contains fennel, peppermint and ginger.

I thought I was the only one who didn't have success with fennel!

The SFS I've tried are citrucel, psyllium, fibercon, benefiber, fiber choice, fiber smart, and acacia. I think that's all of them!

Yes, I think about hypno, but my doctor doesn't think it would be beneficial to me just yet.

That was before I knew about this website so I didn't know much about the difference between the two fibres. The only fibre supplement I was taking at the time was FibreSmart. My diet consisted of protein, fruits, and vegetables. On weekends I would have potatoes with meals.

If you have a vcr or dvd player you can try doing an exercise program like yoga or pilates. Pilates really works your abs and all the muscles in that area. It might be worth a try. If you do decide to do it, I recommend Winsor Pilates.

You really need to get more vigorous exercise than walking, especially for IBS-C. The diet, supplements, and medication can only work so much for C. You need to speed up your system. As an IBS-D I can barely get enough exercise to consider myself healthy because it makes me 'go' too much. Also don't be nervous about it causing cramping or pain, I find that while exercise makes me 'go' more (sometimes too losely as well), it has never actually caused an attack or pain to my stomach.

Some cheaper ideas than getting a gym membership:
Jump rope - super good workout
Jumping jacks
Running - during your walk try running for a short spurt to start with
Ab workout - crunches until you can't crunch anymore
Stair stepping - step up a few stairs, and back down, kinda like stairmaster except its free
Yoga - look at the poses on this website that are good for relieving gas

Ditto. I'm an A and I've done some very vigorous and strenuous exercise regimes. Exercise has never caused me to have an IBS attack.

I don't know if it rare. However, I suspect it occurs more often than we might think. Many people simply have faith that they do not or cannot contain a trigger.

I pinpoint most problem foods the same way. When I become unstable I immediately drop back to my stable diet. This includes removing all supplements and other non-food items. Once I am stable I introduce the additional things I was consuming one a time. Within a couple of weeks I can usually figure out which things are giving me gas, bloating and usually D.

I do use beano - which of course is a digestive enzyme. The digestive enzymes I have problems with are the multiple enzymes in one tablet/capsule. The enzyme in beano is derived from aspergillus and it is easily purified. However, I believe that sometimes enzymes such as bromelain and papian derived from pineapple and papaya are not isolated and purified. Rather ground dried fruit that contains enough of the active enyzme is used in the preparation. The dried friuts contain mostly IF. In addition fillers such as microcrystalline cellulose, an IF, are added.

Personally, I believe it is important establish a base diet that contains no supplements which you can use when problems arise. My base diet is very simple. It consists of oatmeal, grilled chicken breast, white rice and boiled carrots. When I dropped back to this diet I find that bloating, gas and D usually stop with 24-48 hours.

Good luck

Exercise is not the only component, but will help greatly. Basically if you exercise a lot but don't watch your diet, it probably won't be succesful. So do both diet and exercise.

Group cycle would be a great intense workout. Also would work out the legs to build muscle.

that contains the same ingredients as regiment. It doesn't seem to help the bloating for me.

do you have to buy regiment on line still? Or is it available in stores yet?

Group cycle or 'spinning class' is a class offered at most gyms where everyone is on a stationary bicycle and an instructor guides you through the workout. Often you don't need to be a member, you can usually buy group class packages or just drop in for one and pay a small fee.

As I showed in my previous post though, no need to go to a gym to get moving!

Yes because it is a prebiotic I feel it helps keep me healthy as possible. I am more bloated when C and I am never C on acacia.

I don't understand this comment. Why not??? It sounds like it's the only thing you haven't tried yet. What are you waiting for?

I really think you should try the acacia again. I've been using it for six months and I'm STILL increasing and trying to find the right dose. It's a very slow process, but it's definitely helping!

My questions as well! I look 6 months pregnant at night and find it hard to walk around. In the morning, I look fine and can even see my ribs.......

Not sure exactly what you mean by all herbal preperations. Do you mean all herbal teas, peppermint capsules, probiotics, any calcium and magnesium, and any other store bought supplement?

I was talking about digestive enzymes in particular. Some digestive enzymes like the one found in beano is derived from cultures so it contains relatively little IF. Others like papian is ground up plant material - mostly IF. This is true of may other herbal preparation that come in pill or capsule form too.

I don't take any digestive enzymes or herbal preparations other than lactase for digesting lactose in milk. I have found that most of them produce too much gas/bloating and D probably because of the IF.
