I answered part of your question in this message. The benefit is that it contains white flour which is very low in IF.

For a detailed explanation of sourdough bread see web page. The only difference between sourdough and other breads is the yeast is wild yeast instead of packaged yeast that is grown on flour and water. As you can see from the recipe on the sourdough web page there is no reason for sourdough bread to contain dairy -- but sometimes it can.

It is important to read the labels on all the foods you purchase.

Syl gave you a perfect answer, so I'll chime in with a cook's "me too".

Sourdough bread is typically made with a fermented "starter" - usually flour and water, and sometimes yeast - which is what gives it its "sour" taste, not buttermilk. Sourdough bread should contain NO dairy whatsoever, which is why it's recommended as one of the safest breads for IBS. Definitely read ingredient labels before you buy!

Thanks. I thought I got a response before. I will try to eat it as much as possible. It is unfortunate that bakeries do no put labels on thier fresh baked goods. I usually dont buy from the bread aisle. Those breads contain too many preservatives and artificial ingredients. Thanks for straightening it out for me. Now tell about flour? Is the standard Gold Medal or Pillsbury flour is safe? Its enriched wheat flour.

I cannot help you with flour brands. I live in Canada and I only buy generic Robinhood bread flour.

I find that usually a baker in the bakery can tell you the ingredients in the breads they sell.

Wheat flour should be safe - its WHOLE wheat flour that would be IF.

When I make bread I use all-purpose flour and never have any problem.
