I took a multi enzyme tonight and then I read that it contained milk and wheat. Is this O.K.? I have also heard that there is a pill that lactose intolerant people take so they can eat milk products. Does this work with IBS? Thanks for reading this and for any replys.

Lactaid and other similar lactose-blocking pills DO NOT work with IBS... dairy is problematic for more reasons than just lactose (the proteins themselves are very difficult to digest).

The enzyme supplement *might* be ok, because I'm guessing that there's so little dairy in it... and it's probably a dairy derivative, not straight-up milk. If it IS something that contains milk and in any kind of quantity (within the first couple ingredients), I would discontinue use and find a different supplement to try.

Hope that helps!

Can anyone eat cheese? I miss it very much and I am hopeful that I can tolerate it someday. Any suggestions on good soy cheese or other alternative? I have tried some and it was not a good experience. The enzyme I tried didn't list milk in the ingredience but it listed it that "This product contains milk and wheat." I don't feel sick today but a little different. I don't know if I am just being a nut and worrying to much. Namaste'

Yes, I eat cheese, fetta cheese made of sheeps milk. You can also find goat milk cheese, those are easier to digest milks than cow's.

Soy cheese is yucky and almost always contains cassein, one of the supposedly difficult to digest proteins in cow's milk. I would not eat soy cheese, because it seems it's as bad as cow milk cheese, only tastes grosser.

Do you know if you are lactose intollerant?

Thank you so much and that explains why my stomach has been so weird. I was forcing myself to eat it because I thought it was our only option. I do drink soy milk. So goat cheese is o.k.? I stopped with the milk products because I thought we were suppose to! Thanks Namaste'

you are supposed to stop eating dairy products, it is part of the EFI diet guidelines. Dairy proteins are very hard to digest even if you are not lactose intolerant.

Are milk derivatives "safer" than actual milk ingredients? I've been trying desperately to find a non-dairy creamer (powder) that actually has NO dairy in it. I never thought that would be so hard! But they all seem to contain sodium caseinate. It's for a hot chocolate mix recipe, so the 6 oz of non-dairy creamer is quite small in comparison to all the other safe stuff in it (1 lb of nestle quik, 8 qt box of powdered rice milk, 1 lb powdered sugar), that i can't imagine it would be a problem. What do you think?

The recipe is SO yummy, and I was so excited when I managed to find a rice substitute for the powdered milk!

I can't eat cheese...it's definitely a trigger. I did find Rice slices that come in American and Cheddar flavors, though. I found them in the cooler in the health food section of my grocery store. I make fake egg mcmuffins with it...natural turkey, rice slice and egg white on a Thomas English muffin. They are awesome. Harder cheeses have less lactose, so some people can tolerate parmesan, manchego (my absolute fave) The creamier, like brie, camembert, etc are harder on the tummy. If I know I am going to indulge in cheese, I always take 2 enzymes and know that doesn't always protect me...I pay the price and pray I am at home! I find the soy cheeses rather untasty too...

The casein in the rice cheese doesn't bother you?

...is a dairy protein. I thought we were suppose to avoid casein and whey too.

Since you do okay with it...I guess you just need to stop the lactose! Enjoy your rice cheese!!!

All milk derivatives and proteins should be avoided (including caein and whey). A lot of 'fake' cheeses still have milk products in them, which is frustrating.

I haven't found any tasty fake cheeses anyway, so I can't offer much help in trying to find a good safe one. I did find a soy cheese that didn't have any triggers in it, just a bit too much fat, but it was awful tasting.

Ok, I have been eating this Rice cheese for a few months now, never looked at the casein ingredient, because I didn't know about it! I buy Rice Slices by Galaxy Nutritional Foods (www.galaxyfoods.com) I buy it at Stop 'n Shop in the HFS. No casein, lactose, soy or gluten. Fully vegan. They are awesome melted like in an egg mcmuffin.

Hi Amy! How's it going? I just ordered Galaxy shredded soy cheese from my local health food store. I read about Casein on this site a while ago and have been struggling to find some soy cheese w/o it. I'm glad you like the Galaxy--so reassuring to know it is good b/c I really miss cheese.

Anyway, I hope you are well....

It is weird that you say that the galaxy rice cheese has no casein as the same product in canada has casein and butterfat, weird, and sad because i love the stuff soooo much.

Annoying with differences between countries! new

This is a little outside the subject of this thread but fits with the subject of the previous post so...

I think it's so annoying when the same product has different ingredients in different countries. It's so tiring to have to double check everything... We have enough problems as it is here in Sweden since we don't have a lot of alternative products. Here you're pretty much lucky if you find a product at all, but there is no chance of finding an organic low-fat version... Unless maybe if you live in Stockholm (our capital)...

Another problem is that when you bake and use for example Heather's recipes you don't know if the fat content will be the same et.c. because you don't know how similar the products you use are.

For example, Heather says cocoa powder is fat free. Mine says it has about 20 weight % fat. Of course since you don't use that much cocoa powder the amount per serving might be so low it could be called fat free... Another thing is applesauce. I can't find an unsweetened applesauce where I go shopping, except the garbage with artificial sweeteners, and I really don't want to make my own applesauce every time I want to bake something, so I use applesauce with sugar (I just try to make sure it has as much apples as possible and as little sugar and other stuff as possible - I'm pretty happy with the one I have now since it only contains apples, sugar, pectin and a preservative that I think it pretty ok).

Yes, Miso...I agree it is weird that the ingredients would be different. I am from Canada originally (west coast)and was able to find my fave product called Earth Balance natural non-butter spread (it tastes amazing!) here as well with the same ingredients. Have you tried it? As for the cheese, I have no idea why they are marketed differently.

Hey Sufie!!! Nice to see you here...I hope you are well, too! The Galaxy is good, yes I agree. I took awhile to find something non-trigger like in regard to the cheese dept. I still have the occasional small amount of manchego cheese, which is my fave. Once in a blue moon I will have it! Now, maybe I need to put in a request for Galaxy to make a lactose free manchego!

I was SO excited to see galaxy cheese at the store tonight -- but the shredded version my grocery carries DID have the casein.

Actually, my husband did make it, but we think he used too much powdered sugar because it had a sludge-like consistency!! Yuck! We decided to give up; I like the hot chocolate recipe I found on the recipe board better anyway (don't tell my mother-in-law!):

1 cup vanilla soy/rice milk
2 Tablespoons sugar
2-3 teaspoons cocoa powder.

Yummy and safe!
