I have to go to not one, but three households for thanksgiving dinners! Needless to say, I'm a little bit nervous. I can't eat at all 3 places, however, I don't want to be rude...especially at my future mother-in-laws home!!

Does anyone have suggestions? So far, I figure I can eat white-meat turkey, white breads, and that's about it!!

Should I take fiber with me, or eat it on my first meal only?? Help!

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here! I am very thankful I have found this board!

I am also having three Thanksgiving meals, so I am in the same boat as you. Luckily, mine are spread out throughout the day so this should actually be best for my IBS since I will be "snacking" all day instead of eating a huge meal.

Definitely take your fiber with you. I take my Citrucel pills 3 times a day so I will probably take them before each meal. Since the fiber suppliments are just like eating a potato full of soluble fiber, they're safe to take (if you're taking the recommended dose) several times a day.

As for food - this is going to be a tough problem since you won't know "how" the food was made and what ingredients were put into it. The white turkey will be okay, but anything else you might want to ask how it was made. In order to be nonchalant, maybe take a tiny bite of something that looks safe (or pretend to) and say "Ooh, this is good. What is in these (food)?"

And when all else fails, just explain to people (and mother-in-law) that you have some food intolerances and have to be careful.

Hope everything goes well!

Definitely eat a small, safe snack at each house... and try to create a window of time between your three (small meals). Also, maybe you could divide your thanksgiving meal into three portions, one at each house (for example, have your desert at house number 3). Just another idea...

Good Luck! ) And remember to bring some peppermint, fennel, chamomile, or ginger tea bags w/ you... ), and also a safe food to contribute to each house, just in case....

I agree with everyone! I'm making the yummy pumpkin angelfood cake to take with me, as well as a baked sweet potatoe (along with regular candied potatoes). If you feel comfortable telling at least one or two of the hostesses, you could bring safe foods with you as well! I am also bringing almost fatfree turkey gravy-but I'll be with my husband's family and they are all supportive!! Good luck! Maryh

What about cooked veggies/squash? Usually people will have them. Let them know you're going to 3 different places so that's why you're not eating a lot, I'm sure they'll understand.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to overeat at any house or you'll be VERY sorry and uncomfortable. Just politely explain that you have 3 meals, and it gives you a built in excuse to select your foods carefully. Take some fresh buns (white) with you.
Have a bun, white meat, cranberry sauce should be OK, any cooked veggies, (avoid mashed potatoes - almost always full of butter and milk) - avoid gravy - high in fat. Avoid the stuffing - unless it's made with only white bread - whole wheat can cause attacks unless you can tolerate it.
I like the idea of taking your teas with you, and your supplements. Good luck and happy thanksgiving.

Laurel - Sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle! How about calling some of your hosts and asking if they can bake you a yam or sweet potato or regular white potato so you can have that w/your white meat and bread? Do you think they'd be offended? What about nuked carrots? Cranberry sauce--not the whole berries in the sauce--but the smooth one. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Linda - Thanks for the welcome. I'm not really back for good--just checking in once in a while and trying to gain back insight into IBS probs. My T'giving was great--went to a friend's house up here on the "hill" and, boy, is she a great cook. Of course, I shouldn't have had that piece of apple pie--got way too stuffed afterward but no bad stuff happened because of it. I just feel really full. They have 3 golden retrievers and 2 cats(Butch, Sundance, Cassidy and I can't remember the others' names!) We all enjoyed the day.
