Soy Milk vs. Nonfat Milk

I was wondering...I've enjoyed a Starbucks Iced Chai Latte made with soy milk (they use Silk) & I checked the nutritional value of the drink--with soy milk, it has 4g of fat. With nonfat milk, the drink has 0g. So I was wondering which choice is better--the nonfat milk or the soy? I have tried to stay away from dairy as much as possible--I don't want to trigger another flare. But is it better to have NO fat when you can? Just wondering!

4g of fat is not a lot, your body does need some fat. If you drink the chai latte with nonfat milk, you might get an IBS attack/flare.

Light "Silk" soy milk just has 2 grams of fat. Delicious!

Even non-fat milk has enzymes in it that can cause a flare up. I agree, just use light soy milk.

Thanks so much for the info about the milk causing flares...that's the last thing I want to do! I normally use Rice Milk (thanks to advice from this board) but the little soy milk in the Starbucks drink doesn't bother me right now.

Too bad they don't offer the "Light" Silk as an option! That would be perfect!

You're right, I forgot about that. I think Chai tea contains black tea, which can be a trigger.

It's quite lovely, with the perfect amount of chai seasoning for my taste.

I really enjoy Yogi teas...I will keep an eye out for the one you recommend.

The chai @ Starbucks has caffeine in it; they do not have a decaf option. I wish they did!

They have a really yummy Stomach Ease tea that has fennel in it. Works great for gas and bloating, and help with digestion after eating a little too much! I noticed yesterday they have a "Laxative" tea... Anyone tried it?

It probably has Senna or Cascara Sagrada in it which is not good for IBS.

Yes, I believe it has Senna. I remember a doctor recommending a Sennakot supplement for me years ago (it was awful). Why is senna bad for IBS?

Senna is a laxative and they're not good for IBSers.

I'm confused; Being an IBS-Cer, I definitely depend on laxatives! Is there something in particular about Senna that's bad?

Any laxitive is bad for IBSers. It may give you temporary relief but in the long run it will cause you more problems with your IBS. Laxatives are harsh stimulants and your bowel becomes dependent on them.

Actually, yes, I think it does. Especially if I drink it right after a meal. Unfortunately, it's a bit more expensive than Heather's teas...
