Every so often my bowels get like a kinked hose. It takes a while to get it moving again. This time it has been about 3 weeks (I mentioned a couple weeks ago how I was doing badly from possibly missing too many acacia doses and not drinking enough). So what I was wondering is if there is any sort of drug or remedy for calming out the colon. It is in knots! I need to find out what options are available before going to the doctor. She usually works with me on what I want. So has anyone heard of something to ease the cramps that are restricting my colon? My stool is normal consistency and I do not need mineral oil or stool softeners or things like that. Until my colon relaxes nothing will move through as it should and my pain and bloating are awful. My colon feels like a balloon that someone is pinching tight and not letting the air out.

If I'm understanding what you're experiencing, it sounds like an anti-spasmodic could help. I take Donnatol and it works well - it's an anti-spasmodic combined with belladonna which is a phenobarbitol, I think. Bev recommended it and it's done more for me than Levsin or Levbid or Bentyl.

I'm IBS-D and so is Bev, but I think the kinky gut problem is the same for Ds and Cs, just a matter of whether it convulses (for Ds) or charley-horses (for Cs).

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time and hope you and your doctor can get you unknotted.

Take care.

Donnatol comes in short-term (about every 6 hours) and long-term (about every 12 hours) doses. I've tried both and prefer the short-term. And you shouldn't drive while you're taking it. If I'm having a rough patch I'll sometimes take it before bed.

What are anti-spasmodic pills? Is this something that you can purchase over the counter, or do you need a prescription for it?

I had forgotten about antispasmodics. I have taken two before many years ago and didn't have good results with them and as with everything I was super dizzy. But perhaps Donnatol on a needed basis only might be good. I was thinking of something more tranquilizing but an antispasmodic would be a good choice as long as it doesn't increase my C (which is what I am right now).
Fortunately I think my bad streak MAY have broken last night. I had to up my acacia a bit for a short time to get over the hump and my colon feels less like a pinched balloon now. I just hope I stay this way tomorrow.

Hmm, you may have already done this, but my standby for this is lots of peppermint (tea, caps, and Altoids) and a heating pad. If you've done the hypno CDs, session 3 is the one I replay when I'm having this.

I'm glad to hear your bad patch may be over - I'll keep my fingers crossed that's the case.

I don't think a straight antispasmodic would increase your C, but I'm not sure about the belladonna and/or phenobarbitol components in Donnatol. Maybe someone else knows or your doctor should.

drug that relax the smooth muscle of the bowel. They can be helpful to ease the spasming of IBS. These are prescription drugs.

You can read about them here, here, and here.

Peppermint is a natural antispasmodic.

My own experience was that once I was getting stable on the EFI Diet, Donnatol was helpful. Before that, nothing helped.

I'm an IBS-C, and find that dicyclomine (Bentyl) works wonders for an attack, cramping, gas, etc. And it shouldn't make C worse; it doesn't for me. In fact, I have found that taking it when I feel constipated (and have gas and bloating associated with that) actually helps me be able to go!

I came around last Sunday and sort of relapsed very lightly Tuesday and felt tired. But otherwise I am all better thanks to upping my acacia and not missing a dose. That was all I did different. So don't ever doubt the necessity of SFSs. And try not to miss doses.
