Anyone had an endoscopy without sedation?

Hi,
I'm due for an endoscopy next week, and am considering leaving out the sedation. I can have a throat spray which apparantly numbs the throat to make it more comfortable.

I don't want the sedation because I want to know what's going on and remember anything said to me.

Has anyone got any experience of no sedation and how was it?

Thanks for any feedback! Muchly appreciated!

I had one about 6 years ago and I can't remember if I had sedation or not but the whole thing didn't take more than 10 minutes.

The worst part for me was the doctor coming in, dropping the camera on the floor and then fumbling with it before putting it down my throat. Not exactly a sign of confidence! Anyways, it was real quick and pretty painless but again I can't remember if I had sedation or not. Sorry.

I haven't had one, but as I understand it they don't need to sedate you ... what they do is give you a powerful tranquillizer (valium?) and you are awake for the entire procedure albeit very relaxed!

I've heard that the worst thing about this procedure is the feeling that you can't breath as they put the tube down your throat.

My recommendation is to go the tranquillizer route so you can achieve your goal of being awake while, at the same time, you won't care what the hell they are doing to you!

They actually give a medication called Versed--it has sedative qualities, but its most important quality is that it makes you FORGET any discomfort and usually you also forget the procedure. Tell them you want them to go light on it, and you'll likely remember it all.

Had one done a few years ago. No sedation. Just the throat spray which numbs the throat. As the tube is put into the mouth the Dr. told me to swallow as if I was drinking a glass of water. I watched the whole procedure on the screen and the Dr. told me what I was looking at, he was looking for Celiac disease which was negative. It was pretty cool actually to watch. The only thing was when he started to pull the tube back up I started gagging, but nothing else happened. So if you can go without sedation go for it!! take care Sue
