Hi. I am 22 and have IBS with alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation, gas, severe bloating and pain. I also very fatigued and experiencing both muscle cramps and spasms. My doctor writes me off as having IBS and wont do anything but recomment fiber. I really want a colonoscopy to rule out IBD and other things, but he feels that it isnt necessary to have one because i show no alarming symptoms (even though i have passed out from the pain and it frequently wakes me up night). I am taking fiber, following heathers diet and taking tummy tamers. How do I convince my doctor to let me have a colonoscopy? I need help!

Get a new doctor! It usually takes a few tries to get a good one. Many doctors hardly know anything about IBS. And they like to brush you off since it's not life threatening...especially if you're young...I've had it happen. Are you seeing a GI or just your regular Dr.? You need to find a good GI.

I say take the direct path- Just come right out and ask for it. Alot of time I understand doctors don't want the patient to have to go through unnecessary testing- but has he done any other tests on you? I had a sigmoidoscopy, small bowel series, cat scan, xrays and ultimately a colonoscopy. Again- Try the direct approach..

I'd also say try to get a new doctor. I have recently went to a new one and I'm getting a colonoscopy in late July. Good luck!!!
