I read on the board not to use sugar substitutes. Why is this? Is there any sugar substitute that WILL work besides honey? Splenda maybe?

Sugar substitutes make my symptomps worse, bloating and cramps. Sugar alcohols are the worst. I think people with IBS are more sensitive to sweeteners - they are not natural for the body and our system doesn't digest them. Instead, we get bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation - pick your own . I completely stay away from them - after all, that teaspoon of sugar in my morning tea won't make me gain 5lbs!

To give you a different answer than the others, I use splenda and while it does give me a little bloat I don't have any other problem with it. I know this goes against Heathers info but as said before, everyone has different triggers and I am lucky to be able to tolerate splenda. Give it A try, and only use a little, you may be ok just be careful and try it on a day you don't work or have plans.
