Can you tolerate yogurt?

I've been staying away from dairy for about 5 days now (I think it's too early to tell if it helps yet). I use soymilk and soy yogurt instead. I was wondering if anyone here cannot have regular milk, cream, etc. but does fine with yogurt?
I know it says here to eliminate dairy products completely but I love yogurt and I'm sorry but soy yogurt doesn't taste as good. I can live without regular milk but really miss yogurt - is there some hope for me?

I've never felt that I've had any problems with dairy but then, I've never had an awful lot either. Like you, I've cut it right down whilst I come to terms with this IBS thing, (just have a scrap of goat's butter on toast sometimes) but know I can usually have it in moderation.

I've never had any problems with yoghurt. I did switch to soy yogurt for a while, because Heather says all dairy is a trigger, but I didn't notice any difference. Now I am kind of going back and forth between soy, goat and regular yoghurt, depending on what I find in the store. My herbalist recommended goat to me as easier to digest because it has a fraction of the lactose of cow - like 10% or something.

The only dairy I eat is yogurt, which doesn't seem to give me many problems. I just eat the fat and artifical sweetener free ones, though. Like you, I probably couldn't give up yogurt, either!

I am not a huge fan of Soy either....But..If you try the brand "Silk" soy products, I love them. Yogurt, milk, yogurt smoothy drinks, all of it...And it actually helps my stomach.

Katka, I love all dairy - milk, cheese, yogurt, icecream - you name it. About the only dairy I can handle is what's in milk chocolate and margarine/butter. I have tried soy yogurt - it is so expensive! It tastes okay, a bit too sour, but it is palatable. I prefer real yogurt. I found out about 2 years ago that I can't tolerate real yogurt anymore. :'( It seems to be trial and error for me. I can tolerate something and then WHAM! I can't anymore. It's depressing. It's worse because I can't afford the substitutions all the time. I just have to make do with what I can and when I can. Good luck, I totally empathize with you. *hugs*

I agree, Silk makes good soy products overall. About the only soy product I can't handle at all is soy ice cream! I have tried it many times, different flavors, different brands, and I just can't come to grips with it. At least I can still eat sorbet and popsicles.

Have any of you heard of that Dannon Activia yogurt?? I thought about trying it, but it's expensive and I bet you'd need to try it more than a few times before seeing any results. It claims to help normalize the digestive tract after contuous use. Any thoughts? I looked at their website for the product, but didn't really give me anything more than what the TV commercials did. Thank you.

That is one of the things I tried thinking it would help make me better. My mom tried it w/me. She doesn't have IBS. It gave her "d". Not me. It didn't do anything for me. It was easy on my stomach though. I don't feel like it did anything special to me. It says it's supposed to regulate your digestive system. It sure didn't me. Soy yogurt on the other hand does.

You can read more FAQ's on www.activia.ca
They don't suggest people with sensitivities to milk products use this.

Thanks everyone for your answers !
I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't seem to give it up!
renne21 - where do you buy goat yogurt, in your local grocery store? I don't think ours has it (east coast, shop at Giant).
polly2004 - I've tried Silk yesterday, it was OK but I still wasn't big on it. I have yet to try the ice cream - loooove ice cream .
Sommer - I love Activia but I don't think it'd have a different effect on us IBS people than any other yogurt. It comes in small containers so I think maybe less yogurt=less trouble?
Anyway, I think I'll go another week cold turkey with no dairy and then do the "milk challenge" where you drink abour 12oz of milk on empty stomach and if you don't have symptomps for about 4 hours, dairy is OK for you. Either way, I hope even if dairy wasn't OK, regular yogurt would be .

The lactose in the milk may not be the problem for IBSers. Milk and milk products contain proteins that cannot be digested well. I don't think your milk challenge will be accurate as you can get an attack from something you eat or drink 1 or 2 days later.

Yogurt is nasty for IBS. Dairy wrecks havoc on IBS. Lactose is not the only issue--dairy proteins are hard on the system.
They can make you either D or C. They can cause horrible cramping and bloating.

There are many calcium rich alternatives. Remember, we are a culture with a bizarre cow-food habit.

Yogurt is a trendy food. For optimum probiotic benefit just buy probiotics. They have way more potency and won't ruin your day or week.

Kate, IBS-D.

Hi, everyone I am new here have been reading the boards for the last couple of weeks and getting myself acquainted with the forum and the members on the forum. I am IBS-C, have been for the last 40 of my 49 years, I am also lactose intolerant, I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for the last 28 years due to the fact that my body does not metabolize proteins or fats and this has continued to get worse as I age so with the exception of eggs I am almost vegan. .

Well anyways I do not like the taste of most soy products, have eaten the yogurts, and tried the soymilk and do not care much for them. I instead use Rice Dream and Oat Milk, which I love the taste of and would recommend to anyone that does not care for soy products. However, I have found the most sinfully delicious soymilk ice cream called "Purely Decadent Soy Delicious", by Turtle Mountain. The Cookie Avalanche was fantastic but the Mocha Almond Fudge is to die for, it's dairy and lactose free, less then half the fat of ice cream, 65% of the calories of regular ice cream, cholesterol free, certified vegan, and made with organic ingredients. It makes a great occasional treat for me if I can keep my husband out of it.

Wind has some good points - usually most soy products really don't affect the taste of foods too badly either, especially depending on the type of food. Like some prefer vanilla soy milk when making a smoothie...or chocolate when they want chocolate milk.

I was told by my doc that I could try taking Lactaid if I thought I might digest regular dairy. Ask your doc about it. But dairy appears to be one of my worst IBS cuplprits. It's prob just best to incorporate dairy substitutes as much as possible, if you can afford to. Good luck. It's tough for me to avoid dairy, I love dairy! :'(

Wish you the best of luck Katka!! I cannot stand soy icecream and so far that is one of the very few soy products I can't seem to stand, no matter how often I try. Soy cheeese, soy cream cheese, soy sour cream, soy milk...are more tasty to me. Boca burgers and Morningstar Farms makes decent meatless products also.

Thanks Sommer, good luck with finding ice cream you like !

Gracie - the milk challenge is to show whether I'm lactose intolerant or not. I know it's not the lactose that triggers IBS but at least I'll know one more thing about my body !

Two weeks I would have said definetly! I ate yogurt very often and was so proud of the fact that it was the one dairy food I could handle. Then I decided to go off of it because I thought it might be causing my gas. I bought it again yesterday to try again - and poof! instant gas and bloating. I am a believer - the IBS life is a dairy free one.

I think I can actually handle yogurt okay. I usually eat it after a workout as a treat and since my digestive system works better after a workout that might be why I can handle it.

I buy Plain, Mountain High Fat Free Yogurt found in health stores. 0 fat but 60 grams of natural sugar for 32 oz. I love the taste and a good way to get my daily calcium I believe.
