Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board. I've been suffering with IBS-C for about 4 years. My doc put me on Zelnorm 2 years ago but I didn't see any results so about a month ago, I quit.
A few weeks ago a different gastroenterologist ran a hydrogen breath test and said that I might be fructose sensitive. I was adviced to try to eat different fruits and see which ones bother me - however, I'm supposed to only eat fruit on empty stomach. That way fruit doesn't sit in my stomach and doesn't have time to ferment and cause bloating and cramps. I've been reading here about lactose intolerance and the article said only to take dairy with other foods. I'm thinking, what if it's the same with fruit?
Do you find it easier to eat fruit on empty stomach, or with meals?
Thanks!

hi
well for those of us following Heather's diet the answer would be eat fruit with a soluble fiber based meal cos fruit is mostly insoluble fiber I don't know if you've had a look around the site but there's lots of information about insoluble and soluble fiber.... too much really to explain here.
however , if you Doc has suggested eating on an empty stomach I wouldn't like to say the opposite of that cos well I'm not a Dr lol
anyway have a look around the site in the diet section for more info and then maybe you could talk to your Doc about it and see what he says to that
Godbless hope all works out soon

The only time I'll eat fruit on an empty stomach is if it's a banana (lots of soluble fiber) or if I'm feeling a bit on the C side (it'll make me go!).

I think I'm a bit fructose sensitive (I can't have more than one smoothie a week, for instance), but I can eat a serving or two of fruit with every meal and not have a problem.

In the EFI Diet, dairy is one of the big four trigger foods. The problems with it go beyond lactose intolerance - the proteins are also hard for IBSers to digest. The safe course is to avoid dairy totally.

Except for SF fruits like bananas and applesauce, I avoid fruit on an empty stomach.

As Seggy pointed out, the explanation of how to eat fruit (and why not to eat dairy) under the EFI guidelines takes a bit of reading. Here's a link to an old post that will point out to background reading - just keep following the links. Once you've figured out the basics of the EFI Diet, you can decide if you want to try it. If so, then you can talk with your doctor about trying the EFI approach rather than his.

HTH.
