Has anyone heard about Xifaxan, which is an antibiotic that kills all the "bad" bacteria in the gut and keeps the "good"? I'm supposed to go on it tommorrow, but was wondering if it has helped anyone out.
Thanks!

This has been brought up often in the past. The search button should always be used before posting a question. Not that we don't want to help you! It just helps from keeping the boards frome becoming cluttered with the same questions over and over.

And of course, if you still have questions, you can ask it within one of the older posts you find. That also helps.

Tierney,

I was considering this too. Did you get a breath test to determine if you have bacterial overgrowth? Well, I can't report any experience with it personally, but have heard from one other person that it made a big difference in her symptoms. Please let us know how that goes.

And I agree that some people do use the boards to ask the same question over and over and over again. People frequently ask questions without a search so don't sweat it. Xifaxin isn't one that has been discussed too much and I don't think it hurts to open it up once in a while for those who may be new to the boards.

Good Luck and let us know if it helps!

I took it, but I didn't get the breath test, so don't know if I actually had bacterial overgrowth. It did nothing for me, but as I said, don't know if I had the problem it is intended for.

I never actually had a SIBO test, but I explained my symptoms to my (new) doctor, so he gave me this to try. I'm supposed to start taking it today...

How long does it take to work, is it common to get another round of prescription past the ten days?

My doctor said that you're supposed to take these antibiotics for 10 days and then do the same thing a month later. I'm not sure how long you're supposed to do it for, though.
