My question is concerning my daughter who's almost 13. Is being unable to control her bowels day & especially at night a symptom of IBS? She cannot make it to the bathroom in enough time & has accidents. This is especially worse at night-time. She is either constipated or has diareha daily. Her doctor I felt was not concerned enough about this. She has called herself "stupid" and "retarded" because of the accidents. She wears her maxi pads, whether on her cycle or not, daily to protect herself. I had UC and endured 6 surgeries including the complete removal of my colon. My fear is this could be her problem. Her pain has never been more than untolerable bloating & cramps with occasional jabs. Is this possibly an IBS symptom?

This is serious and needs to be taken seriously. Get her to her family doctor immediately and get a referral to a GI ASAP. The poor kid is really suffering here. She needs to be tested. In the meantime, you can always try Heather's diet - it is healthy, based on all 4 food groups and may help. It's worth a try. Also, immodium works great for diarrhea. Peppermint tea will also help ease attacks. Read through the dietary info on this website.

If you're doc isn't concerned, find one who is. This needs to be addressed immediately. Good luck to both of you.
