3 years ago, my iron levels got very low and I had to have iron treatments...Well, now I have the same problem again. The hemotologist said I do not have enough sources of iron in my diet, since I do not eat red meat, or green leafy vegetables....I don't take iron supplements, since they are very constipating. How do all of you get your source of iron in your diets?

Green leafy vegetables. Why do you not eat them? IBS or other reasons?

Multi-grain cheerios are also very well fortified with iron, but I don't know if that would give you C, like supplements.

Hi, Marjo.
Why don't you eat green leafy vegetables? I'm able to eat them if they're cooked. Other good sources of iron are tofu, black beans, and lentils. Pureeing them and preparing them in a way that's IBS safe makes them easier to digest.

I haven't had a problem with low iron levels, even though I haven't eaten red meat in 10+ years. However, if you've had this problem before it seems like you would need to take iron supplements. You've probably tried this already, but could you take a lower dose of iron supplements, which might reduce the possibility of constipation?

I eat lean cuts of red meat once or twice a week, and I eat my green leafy vegetables.

I take a multivitamin with iron every day, plus I love beans and lentils (and green leafy vegs and tofu when they're cooked right). My iron is on the low side, but not anemic. If I get IF with every meal, I'm not C.

Ok, if you eat alot of black beans, lentils and green leafy vegetables, do you eat beano everyday? I hate having a gassy stomach all of the time. I work in an office with people coming and going all of the time.

Can't take iron because it constipates me.

What are some good green leafy veggies, besides spinach?

I use Beano when I eat stuff like cauliflower or broccoli, but not for beans or lentils. I guess I've eaten beans for long enough that I have all the enzymes needed to digest them. Lentils aren't very gassy at all (for me), and neither are cooked greens.

Oh, and cocoa is high in iron as well (10% of the RDA in one tablespoon, according to my Hershey's cocoa at home). So daily soy/rice/almond milk hot cocoa and ADBs should be prescribed for anemia!

Oatmeal has a lot of iron. Bread has some, 10% daily recommended for one slice of bread, is it?
Anyway, I have the same problem. I am always extremely tired, and I'm always falling asleep. I'm actually afraid to try anything ..I'm way too unstable for green vegetables. ...
