Morning all

So, yesterday AM I had a nasty attack and hunted around until I found this website. I suppose I've been putting the research off until my official diagnosis but, after reading this site and all of your posts, I now know it's just a formality and I might as well start getting serious.

The problem was it was Saturday and I had a nice meal in planned with my bf. Still, my stomach had settled by the evening and I knew what chinese meal was the kindest on my tum so I ate half of it, a little of the rice and had my own side order of sugarsnap peas (I think they're called something else in the US - snow peas?)

Anyway, I just had two glasses of bacardi instead of the usual four and only half of the chocolate I'd planned (not 'cause chocolate's a problem for me but 'cause I knew I'd eaten enough) and I just feel so proud of myself.

I've had weight problems over the years 'cause I comfort eat and you can imagine the vicious circle I've been getting myself in over this IBS. Get stressed, get ill, get stressed, eat more, get ill ..... :

Maybe I have this thing cracked! Probably early days to be getting too confident though!

Can you guys have alcohol in moderation or have some of you needed to give it up? What about chocolate? Most is OK but I avoid the processed stuff and go for really yummy organic. Do you have Green & Black's over there?

Never EVER give up!

I can handle a glass of wine or a fruity drink like a margarita just fine. (I don't know if I can handle more than one, but that's because I've never been much of a drinker.) Dark chocolate I tolerate very well most of the time. I also do okay with milk chocolate in small quantities. I do avoid chocolate the first day or 2 of my period, but otherwise, it's fine for me.

I can tollerate one or two mixed drinks, plus I'm not a much of a drinker. However, if you're still not stable, I'd stay away from the alcohol and chocolate for now.

I usually have some of that from time to time...the 70% cocoa stuff is very nice and not too bad on the tum in moderation...Im fine with cadburys chocolate too...and I am exactly like you with the yo yo weight issues and food for comfort...am STILL struggling with that one...I am going to se a dietician soo though so I am hoping that will be a motivational force to start eating better!!

Well done for resisting too much alcohol...I can usually handle certain drinks like bacardi and malibu with lemonade or cranberry juice or something like that quite well on a full stomach with preventative immodium. Thats what my plan for wednesday is anyways when I go out with my coursemates. Alcohol is definately an individual thing for some people they cant handle it full stop...but for some of us sinners(sinead, tommy you know who you are ) we will put up with the next day pain for a night on the tiles I think with IBS the most difficult and gradual thing to get used to is MODERATION....definately a key word that needs adding to my vocabulary!

I have a lot of problems with alcohol--especially anything with sulfites in it. It totally bothers my stomach & I have to avoid it. I can cook with wine and other alcohol, though, for flavor!

Recently I have found that any chocolate hurts makes me bloat and urgency

...and I have always found that even one glass of wine kills my tummy, i NEVER have alcohol without pain the next day, but I find that I can drink white wine/cider/champagne without pain on the night, then have a hangover to the power of twenty five and rotten stomach aches the next day.

So, only when it's worth it do I bother with alcohol.

I can tolerate about 3 drinks at most, if I've been taking care of my stomach up until that point, and keep drinking good teas or other precautions the day after. My drinks are usually beer (I always go for dark, yummm!) or red wine because I'm not a huge hard liquor fan and I drink mainly for the taste these days. That said, my tolerance has gotten so low recently that my 3 drinks, spread out over a few hours (ie a looong happy hour with friends) is plenty to keep me happily buzzed and to not hurt my tummy.

Chocolate, on the other hand, I avoid completely. I'm not sure I'd have the willpower to stop after only a bite, and more would surely make me sick!

I eat Dove's Dark Chocolate promises everyday. It is one thing that I feel I treat myself too, that does not bother me. I don't drink alcohol at all. I do like a virgin strawberry daiquiri when I go out.

Since IBS I NEVER drink beer. As soon as I swallow the 2nd or 3rd mouthful I get cramps and D! I haven't had a beer since August 2004, even though Coors Light used to be my drink of choice.

White wine, cider and champagne don't hurt til the next day so I drink them.

I miss my beers

hi,
its good to hear you can tolearate all those things in one sitting!! I could only have one or the other in one day, bar the alcohol i havnt had the courage to retry that yet!! havnt had a drink now since i got engaged in feb and that was only one small glass of champagne, before that it was xmas and it triggered quite a bad attack, although i was nowhere near being stable at that time!!

I havnt tried the organic choc i seem to cope ok with cadburys as long as i only have a very small amount- which isnt the easiest of tasks!!

Just out of interest do you have your chinese without the msg added? I have to coz i cant tolerate that at all... i was very disappointed to find it as an ingreedient in oxo cubes, it makes making soup very difficult i am yet to find a nice tasting veg stock cube!! its very frustrating!!

good luck

I think I am sensitive to msg; I suppose it's just been trial and error at my local chinese. I now know that Chicken and pineapple and chicken and mushroom seem not to cause any problems the next day.

I've traditionally always had all 3 on a Sat night but am finding that I'm getting sickly more often on a Sunday now. I find that when my bf says he's going out with friends on a sat, as he is this coming weekend, I find myself quite relieved that I can just have a salad in the evening.

As I said, I'm usually OK as I tend not to be stressed on a Saturday night and I just have small portions of things that don't appear to cause me problems - I suppose that might change as time goes on!

MSg kills me too, Some chinese restaurants will leave it out if you ask- it might be worth trying a few local ones to see who will ,or what dishes don't have any
