Hello, my name is christina and i was diagnosed with IBS-C about 6 months ago. when i came across this website i could believe it... i was so excited! i had been eating nothing but insoluble fiber, and now after only 3 days of eating soluble i feel much better. i have a few questions..
first of all, my doctor recommended Zelnorm, and i was wondering if any of you have any experience with that...if its a good thing to take or not.
also, i was reading heathers book and it said honeycomb cereal is a safe food to eat, but i saw on the honeycomb box "good source of whole grain". is whole grain bad?
also, ive been eating really bland foods for the past couple days and i guess i should start expanding to include insoluble fiber...and i was wondering if any of you have any good ideas on how to start doing that.
and lastly, i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for fiber supplements (other than acacia) or anything that would help constipation. ive gone for a week without having a bowel movement, and it can get pretty painful..but then again i havent been eating right, either.
i know this is a lot...but any help at all would be wonderful! thank u sooo much

Hi Christina,

So glad you found this board- it seriously changed my life. Dealing with a diagnosis of IBS can be challenging. We are all here to help!

I don't have any experience with Zelnorm because I am IBS-A mostly D.

I have tried different types of fiber but I have found the easiest to be citrucel caplets because I can carry them with me in my purse. I started slowly by taking 2 in the morning for a week and half to two weeks, and then adding 1 later in the day for a week, then add one to dinner time for a couple of weeks, eventually I ended up at 7-8 a day taken spread out during the day and always before meals. Before trying any type of SFS be sure to have patience and don't take too much too soon or it will make things worse, just start gradually.

As far as incorporating insoluble fiber I liked this a lot:

I bought organic low fat tortillas from whole foods or wild oats and made white rice and chicken breast. I bought Tyson's Teriyaki Chicken Breast from the regular grocery store and cooked and cut up one piece and put the rice and chicken in the tortilla. You can heat the tortilla in the microwave too, it's good. Just a quick easy idea. You can also try buying soy yogurt and have a couple of spoonfulls of that after a meal of soluble fiber and that helps you get used to it also. Just a few ideas- hope it helps!

For insoluble fiber:
-steamed veggies with white rice, pasta or potatoes are great. Veggie is a brand of food that makes a tasty soy parmesan to put on pastas and such. Introduce your veggies one at a time so that if you have an attack you will know what did it.
-I've never tried Zelnorm, I'm a D.
-I only use Heather's acacia fiber and it's fantastic.

I wrote a post yesterday in which I said eating Honeycomb cereal was a bad idea because Honeycomb contained whole grain corn flour, corn bran, and whole grain oat flour. When I wrote that, I didn't realize Honeycomb was on the "What To Eat When You Can't Eat Anything Diet" (WTEWYCEAD). So now I'm confused.

I can kind of understand that whole grain oat flour would be considered a safe ingredient, since oatmeal is on the SF list and is one of the whole grains that IBSers often seem to be able to tolerate.

I'm confused, though, about why a cereal that contains whole grain corn flour and corn bran would be considered tummy-soothing. I know corn meal is on the SF list, but I thought that was because it had been stripped of all (or almost all) of it's husk and bran (Wikipedia). It seems to me that whole grain corn flour would contain both husk and bran and corn bran is, well, bran. All that is IF, so ... help?

I really liked their commercial and jingle;

Honeycombs, breakfast sweet as honeycombs, honeycombs for your
own
Tomorrow morning at your home sweet home you're gonna eat a
breakfast called Honeycombs!
Honeycombs dum dum dum dum....

Honeycomb became a whole grain cereal only about a year ago - as did many General Mills cereal . I think Heather's list was made before this whole grain revolution. Cocoa Puffs and Rice Chex are now made with whole grains. However, I don't have a problem with Rice Chex because it is so processed and doesn't even contain any fiber! This might be the same thing with Honeycomb - it might be very processed and fiber free as well.

Maybe they changed the ingredients after "the list" was made? Remember when the cereals all decided to tote themselves as higher grained to appeal to the health kick...like the breads that are now being advertised as more whole grain?

Just a guess. I think there are other cereals listed on the snack list that also contain corn bran, though. I had the same question about Puffins, which contains Corn Bran.

I didn't realize Kraft was part of General Mills. Thanks for clearing this up.

I checked out Rice Chex (and Corn Chex) and, yup, they both say "Not a significant source of dietary fiber". (web page) Thank goodness for that - Heather's Honey Glazed Snack Mix is one of my staples when my tummy is wobbly.

As for Honeycomb cereal, the Webpage I found says "3 grams of dietary fiber" per serving. It doesn't specify soluble or insoluble, but given the ingredients I'm betting there's too much IF for me when my IBS is flaring.

Maria, I hope you're doing well. And, Bob, I'm really glad I can't remember how the tune went or I'd have the jingle stuck in my head for days.
