Waking from a deep sleep - supposedly "not an IBS symptom", but how many of you do it? Cures?

I'm having real problems sleeping - because of BMs, pain or gassy bloating I don't usually make it to bed til 2am ish - when I'm so exhausted I fall asleep anyway. I'm going to try to remedy that over the next 2 weeks by introducing daily exercise, but my other problem is that very often (like 3 times a week) I am woken from a deep-ish sleep by either severe abdominal pain or the urgent need to race to a toilet and have either D or a gas-powered normal-ish BM. I keep reading time after time, in book after book, that this is NOT an IBS symptom - as IBS is a bowel disorder, and bowels 'go to sleep' when we're asleep so shouldn't be working or hurting. I keep being told by books and websites that this is a 'red flag symptom' for more serious illnesses, but I've had colonoscopy and endoscopy, with no findings from either, so surely that can't be possible?

Somewhat confused by this, and annoyed that it keeps happening. How can I stop something that starts when I'm asleep??! Was woken at 6am this morning with crippling stomach pains, sat on toilet for next 2 hours doubled over and with D. And so now I feel like crap .

Anyone any ideas?

I have had that happen to me very often. But it always is caused by eating something that has Cottonseed Oil in it.

In church last week, during our after service coffee break, there were cookies and I had asked the girl that brought them if they were home made. She said yes. I cannot eat store boughten cookies because of the Cottonseed Oil.

Well, I ended up getting up that night with cramps so bad, I broke out in cold sweat and vomiting. I remembered seeing what I thought were Carmel candies in the cookie. Usually in Carmel and also Butterscotch has it too. So, now I won't even eat any cookies that they may bring and tell me they are homemade.

I ended up in the emergency room a few years ago from eating something I thought was safe. But when I look to see what might be the problem, it always shows up to be Cottonseed Oil.

I had not been able to eat Peanut butter for years because most of the brands have gone to Cottonseed Oil. So when I found Jif, and it had no Cottonseed Oil in it, I was so happy. I used up that jar and it took me quite a while to use it up. But when I went to buy another jar, I noticed that it had Rapseed Oil in it. Since I didn't know if I was allergic to that, I had my first sandwich. Guess what?? I was up in the middle of the night in so much pain, and vomiting.

I don't get Diareah, I just keep having bowel movements until there is nothing but water left. Then the pain stops. But oh, it takes so long to get over it.

I have tried Benadryl and it has helped some. But the main thing is to watch for what I am allergic to.

My feeling since people have so much trouble after they have eaten, they could very well have a food allery. My poor intestines have gone thru a lot. I am 75 years old now and it just gets worse.

I am going to follow Heathers diet, but still will have to check the ingredients. She has done so much work on IBS and my hat is off to her.

I'm reading this post at 2am, I just woke up at 130 with sharp stomach pain and gas. it freaks me out, b/c I always get worried its a stomach bug and I start creating all sorts of anxiety stories in my head - that I'll end up in the ER which has happened a few times to me.
I don't have this often, but it does happen occasionally. I also have been through all the tests to confirm IBS, twice actually. I'm sorry I don't have advice for you but at least know that you're not alone.
Maybe try falling asleep with a hot water bottle on? How close to bedtime are you eating dinner?

and I have also had a colonoscopy and was told its just IBS.

However, I often wake from a deep sleep with cramps and D. It varies monthly, but it usually happens once a month at least.

Trust me! I feel your pain and it sucks. Nothing worse then being up all night with diarrhea!

Have you considered Michael's hypnosis program? I had the same problem as you until I completed all of his CDs. With me, it was all about the subconscious (which never sleeps) getting the right messages. Now, if I wake with cramps, I automatically "put on the brake," the cramps go away, and I go back to sleep.

Michael's AWESOME!

Its my first visit to the site but Ive been suffering from ibs most of my life.I am awakened quite regularly by severe cramping and diaharea this alternates with the constipation bloating and gas.I don't dare take any products such as immodiam or stool softners as they really make my stomach go crazy. I am home from work again today because of the diaharea. I work for a certain world famous clinic and never once has my doctor shown any interest in my problem.Ive had 3 colonoscopys because of bleeding episodes and have some diverticulites as well as ibs. I never know what will set it off. I am glad I found this site as it is hard to talk about with others being a bowel issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had this problem -- but I usually ate the wrong things -- and that's why. Once my IBS became stable - it went away. I also wasn't really what you would call a "heavy" sleeper. I had sleep problems too. So my bowels may not have been all the way asleep. Who knows?

I agree - however my Mickey Mouse blanket and I have spent many a night there! I get really cold when I have attacks and shiver uncontrollably. I have to wrap up in a blanket until I can crawl back to bed. I hate night attacks!!
