This probably isn't the right board but I'm just doing a little research and I was curious as to how people first got their IBS. The categories are:

A)Antibiotics or drugs
B)Stress related
C)Food Poisoning
D)Other

Please post if you're IBS-A, IBS-B, IBS-C as well. Thanks!

I believe mine first started out as stress related and I'm IBS-C.

A) - many bouts with antibiotics, and way too much Advil, Midol, and other anonymous pain medication
B) - stress makes attacks worse, but I don't think it caused IBS entirely
and D) - unknown? possibly something that I haven't found yet?

IBS-D but stable since February..

I had D and stomach problems as a child. For instance I would get D and/or I would vomit every morning before school or some social event (unless of course you told me school was canceled for the day, then suddenly I was fine.) So I would assume it is stress or anxiety related. I am now IBS-C. I guess it just switched when I started to calm down and control my anxiety a little ...I can't win.

IBS-D
I think mine was stressed related. It developed around the time that my parents started drinking heavy and getting abusive. And my mother never wanted to let me go use the bathroom when we were out. She always yelled at me and told me I had to hold it.

Possibly stress started it slowly but my IBS-D didn't get full blown until back in 1980 I was given a med to clean out my colon for a test and from that week on the D never cleared up. And of course that meant the panic attacks and agoraphobia came on the heels of constant worry about D in public. What a vicious cycle this disease can be. It makes me fill up with tears to think that until I found this website I knew I was doomed to a miserable life. And some days it did not seem worth living if I had to live that way. For me Heather's diet was my key out of prison.

my GI said it was because I didn't go to the bathroom while in high school, so it plugged me up. he explained it like, think of your bowels as a friend, when your friend calls you pick up the phone, (go to the bathroom), right? Well, when your friend calls and you stop picking up the phone, your friend stops calling! So, that's why I have IBS?

I'm a IBS-C

I lived in Italy for 3 months when I was 16 / 17. While I was there I had a lot of (unknown to me) unpasturized milk and cheese. I ended up with a GI infection. That might be where it started. We don't know for sure.

I've had IBS since I was 12. Even before that, I had vague stomach troubles... seriously as far back as I can remember. I've ALWAYS had it, and not for any particular reason. Anxiety makes it worse, but it wasn't the cause.

My father has various gut troubles too, as does his mother. They say it isn't hereditary, but I beg to differ.

I don't know how I got it. Well, not exactly at least. About
six years ago I think I developed a mild case of IBS-C and
on Jan.17,2005, it turned absolutely nasty. I woke up that
morning feeling really C and in bad pain, it felt like I had
a blockage in my sigmoid colon. I couldn't figure out how the
heck that happened overnight, but it did and it didn't stop.
The BM's were so stressful that I ultimately had a stroke
last November, only after that did I manage to get it under
control, but I'm still not stable. -Bob

I got severe gastroenteritis twice, ended up in being admitted to ER twice in a couple of months, put in very strong antibiotics after second bout, and all this through a very stressful time - losing my job, amongst other stuff.

I consider myslef IBS-D, but very occasionally can be A.

I think mine is hereditary at its root. My dad has always had stomach issues, and I think his younger sister has too. I think I've heard them mention their mom did, too. My older sister also has IBS.

However, mine flared particularly bad in late 2004 after a particularly stressful year and (according to the GI doc) probably an infection. While I'm stable now, I haven't been the same since the Thursday before US Thanksgiving 2004. I'm thinking it was the combination of stress and infection that made the end of 2004 and most of 2005 such "fun."

Anorexia takes on different forms...some people see themselves as fat and starve themselves to get skinny. Even when one is underweight, their "eyes" see a fat person.

My anorexia was more an issue with control. I have had a lot of heartbreak in my life and is seems that the hunger pangs were a good distraction from being hurt. It is all a matter of control.

I have never had bullimia...tried it once or twice but hated gagging. I am sure that you can have both at the same time.

I've been C all my life, with nausea, D attacks, and bloating floating in and out of the picture. My mom has it, as does her mom. I'm wondering if my niece has it, since she's a carb fan (don't wanna eat meat, don't wanna eat veggies, but give me lots of cinnamon toast) like I've always been.

Had mild issues all my childhood, and some poor medication choices as a child thanks to some less than caring drs... So my IBS-D is almost all of the above.... antibiotic/medical related, loads of stress, family history of some stomach issues... plus my IBS-D was so out of control I became anorexic for quite some time. (Was easier to just not eat so I could leave the house and make it to work... eventually I associated food with sickness and pain).. Once Drs had done every test and crammed a variety of medical instruments in a variety of spots, they told me I had severe IBS, and learn to cope.

There's a lot more to it than deciding you want to throw your food up so you "don't get fat". And there are other ways to "purge" the food...like overexercising or starving yourself for days after "bingeing" on too much food because you feel like crap about yourself for haven eaten. Or, probably the most dangerous, overdosing on laxatives.

It'a horrible existence.

I have no idea how mine started. Someone mentioned using a lot of Advil, which I did use a TON during high school and college softball. I was on 800 mg motrin for an injury for quite a while. I never thought twice about poppin' one of those.

I know mine is stress-related as well.

If you do a search, you'll find this poll has been done before on this message board. As I recall, there were lots of interesting responses.

Based on what I read the last time it was done, you need to add the following key categories:

- Stomach flu/virus
- Dieting/Diet Pills
- Hereditary factors
- Born that way

There may be more, I just can't think of them now!

I was born with IBS, or else I developed it soon after birth. I was C-predominant until I was about 30 than I became an A and then shortly after I became D-predominant.

I may be the longest-serving member of the IBS elite on this board because I've now had IBS for a grand total of 48 years! (In fact, that reminds me ... I had better update my profile because I recently had a birthday!)

I have always had stomach problems growing up, but in I had 5 very stressful years dealing with a sudden divorce of my parents and my dad being extremely depressed and at times suicidal. When my dad finally came out of the depression I had some what of a nervous break-down having panic attacks and that's when my IBS-D started. The panic attacks are gone, but the IBS stuck with me.

You know, I don't know if they necessarily diagnose someone as having both Anorexia and Bulimia at the same time, I think they sometimes just lump the bulimia in and call it "Anorexia- Purging type", but either way. I had anorexia and then bulimia(they frequently go hand in hand). As you can see from the responces, eating disorders really mess up your digestive system The people who have them do want to be underweight usually, but the real reasons behind it is that it's a way to cope with things you're unable to deal with. Obviously a bad way to cope though!

I think it helps to think of the anorexia/bulimia split like IBS-C and -D: it's a very basic way of categorizing. Not everyone with an ED will fall neatly into one category, but basically, anorexics restrict calories, while bulimics will ingest calories - and may ingest a huge amount in a small period of time, called a "binge" - and then "purge" those unwanted calories through induced vomiting, zealous exercise, or laxative use.

I have also now heard of a third category - "bulimarexia'. This might be equivalent to the IBS-A category! It's where a person exhibits symptoms of both anorexia and bulimia at the same time. So, for example, someone who eats extremely little or nothing at all for several days, then breaks the fast with a large binge of several thousand calories, which is subsequently purged.

All of these disorders are, of course, about far more than attempts to control one's weight. They are maladaptive mechanisms for coping with life, much like addictions. The classic expression about EDs is they begin as a means of feeling in control, and they end up controlling you. At least, that's my experience of it.

I don't know for sure but in addition to being high-stress most of my life, I got an intestinal infection while living in Mexico. I was very sick...lost 12 lbs. (that I didn't need to lose at the time). They put me on meds and I started vomiting. Had it going from both ends! Finally got some other meds but I remember really liking spicy foods before that. Can't handle them now. This is only my guess....

IBS-D

Mine came on big time when I was around 19 (3 years ago now) after a period of a few months that included:
- a lot of stress (good stress mostly, but still lots of stress/changes)
- a round of antibiotics (which I'd never had before in my life)
- going on the pill (not really sure if this was related or not)

But looking back I'm pretty certain I've had it my whole life to a lesser degree. The antibiotics and stress probably just triggered it into hyper-mode

I am IBS C mostly... with bouts of alternating. In retrospect, I think I had digestive probs all my life... but things started to slowly deteriorate when I was 15 after being diagnosed with a hiatal hernia & gastroenteritis. From there things slowly went downhill.

I would venture to guess that mine started out of stress, but I'm not really sure. I think I've had it a lot longer than I've been 'diagnosed' with it. The last 5-6 years I've felt pretty crappy, but I started eating a lot differently...drinking more soda, etc.

I also would say I'm IBS-C.

I've had IBS-C since infancy...with me I believe it's always been a functional/motility problem. I also have fibromyalgia, and from what I know, the two are very closely connected. I still suffer from time to time, but basically my coping with this is second nature.
