I have figured it out...it seems that tahini makes me sick. I bought hummus at Central Market and there is no tahini in it...then the hummus from Whole Foods has tahini and I don't feel well when I eat it.
Tahini is well used amongst IBS'ers....could this be a strange trigger for me?

Maybe so - do you have sesame anywhere else in your diet?
Hummus is weird - when it's good it's very good, but when it's bad it's nasty. The best hummus I've ever had is homemade, and when you do it that way you can substitute peanut butter for the tahini. But I'm too lazy so I do grocery store hummus roulette.

Nothing beats homemade hummus. It's so easy (and fast) to make & you control the ingredients.
It's terrible, I know, but I love herbed/pureed garbanzo beans with just a little lemon & spice--skip the tahini! Home-roasted garlic is a lovely addition, as is fresh parsley.
It's really not that much more than pureed chickpeas. Often storebought hummus contains citric acid and other preservatives and sulfites that bother me, not to mention gluten.
Kate, IBS-D.

I am really happy with the Central Market hummus as it has the chickpeas...lemon....garlic...none of the preservatives or anything like that. So on lazy days I will go there...otherwise I will make my own. I love the stuff...
