Hello again. A few days ago (March 13 I think) I posted about the prep that my doctor uses now for all colonoscopies. One member asked how it worked as far as the "clean out". The prep medication I took is called Pico-Salax and it worked like magic ... and didn't make the prep as horrendous as I thought (and have heard) that other preps can be. Yes I was on clear fluids for 2 days prior to the scope, and I did have to do a fleet enema the night before (trying to do it to oneself is not overly easy so I discovered lol). But overall the experience was okay. I took one packet of Pico-Salax on Sunday morning, one on Monday morning and then the fleet Monday night. I had some cramping but it wasn't more painful than the IBS cramps, and most of the pain was with the fleet. And the doctor said I was good and clean, and so are all of the other patients that she gives Pico-Salax.

I would recommend asking your doctors about it for colonoscopy prep. It was dissolved into 5 ounces of water and was fizzy at first. The solution is orange flavoured and not overly unpleasant. I am also a nurse on a medicine unit where a lot of patients have colonoscopies and since the doctors have switched from Mag Citrate and Go-Litely to Pico-Salax it has made everyone's lives easier. There is less disgusting fluid to take in therefore less people get nausea, less people complain, and less sore bums. So now as a nurse and as a patient I am thankful for the switch.

As I also posted, from what I understand it is used in England, is fairly new in Canada, and I don't know about the USA. But there is a website (www.picosalax.com) where there is information and where you can order it.

I am not in any way trying to be a doctor or to promote a product for any personal gain. I am a person who has had IBS as long as I can remember and when I finally gave in and let the doctor do a colonoscopy I was scared to death about the prep. And while any bowel prep is not something anyone wants to do, but if you have to, this is just an option that worked for me. If it can help anyone else then I am happy.

I know that whatever they use in the UK is no where near as bad as the horror stories I've heard of in the US! I had pills to take!

God I wish I'd had pills!! The first time, when I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time, I had something called 'Clean-Prep' - that was so VILE!! I'm a fussy eater anyway, but this stuff was evil. And you had to drink so much of it! It just kept coming and coming. In the end I was lucky, I didn't have to finish it (you can stop as soon as perfectly clear water is 'coming out the other end'). But the memory of how gross that stuff was will stay with me...

The second time I had some it was preparing for swallowing one of those tiny cameras in a plastic pil (can't remember the proper name), I had something called 'Picolax', which I presume is what you're talking about above. Like you said, it was definitely an improvement! It was orangey flavoured, and you had to drink about a tenth of what you did with the Clean Prep.

But yep, would definitely go for the Picolax every time! (Or pills, which I didn't realise you could do )
