Okay- I might be wrong here, but here is my take on it. I have been taking generic immodium for a while b/c it is much cheaper. My generic brand has anhydrous lactose in it. I looked this up and basically it is some sort of bonding agent that is commonly used in all sorts of pills. It is a form of lactose, but of the 5 different forms used for this process, it has the lowest amount of pure lactose in it. I would think that these pills are soooo tiny and mostly made up of the active ingredient that you would probably have to overdose to get the amount that might trigger an attack. I have taken up to 5-8 immodiums(generic) in a day, and I have NEVER had my symptoms worsen. So, I will go against the grain and say, if you are on a budget, don't sweat it unless you find that it does bother you--realistically, with the size of the pill, I don't see how that could happen. Chances are there is a tiny bit lactose lurking in many of the pills we take and we don't even know it!

Well for me lactose (and any dairy) is a huuuuge trigger. I can't handle lactose in any form, even in small amounts in medication. And since the generic brand that I used had lactose in it, yes it made my D worse (instead of stopping it). But not everyone is as sensitive to lactose in small amounts as I am, and not all generic brands have lactose in them. Immodium *is* expensive - if I could find a generic brand of immodium that didn't have lactose I'd be a happy woman!

If you have a drug plan, have you thought about asking your doc to write you a prescription for it? (Or for loperamide, which is the main ingredient in immodium.) That way you could save a bit of money on it anyway.

I might do as you recommended! Seriously, I take it just about everyday!

The generic stuff doesn't work for me! For awhile, I wondered why I'd be taking a dozen of the generic ones & then I OPENED MY EYES!!!

I'll keep my eyes on the labels & should I find a generic brand without lactose, I'll post. So far no luck, today, with SHOPPER'S DRUG MART & zehrs/loblaws "Equate" generic anti-diarrheals.

Darn.
