HEY ALL,

Lately I've had 2 deli meats (both of which I bought at a healthfood store and are organic) Anyhow, neither of them worked. I got D the very next day after eating them. I noticed that they had one thing in common...an ingredient called CARRAGEENAN...DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR OUR IBS????

I also FINALLY found a cheese that tastes very good (according to my friend) the brand is "Tofruti" (in slcies)...BUT although it's VEGAN and all the ingredients are safe and mainly Tofu and Soy..I noticed that darn CARRAGEENAN ingredient is also in this cheese so I'm afraid to try it. ANY THOUGHTS??????

Thanks!!! =o)

I've read multiple posts and article about how it may be a trigger for us. I think Heather posted an article that said it is linked to stomach discomfort and cramps. I'd do a search on her webpage and in the message boards for more info. I'm sure you will find the answer to your question, or at least ore information.

I know some people tolerate it just fine. In fact, a lot of people recommend soy-sation brand soy cheeses. I tried some the other day and haven't felt good since. But I also introduced another new food at the time, which obviously wasn't such a smart idea! So I have no idea what caused my stomach discomfort: the carrageenan, casein, or other food!

It's hard to tell with things like these because some people seme to tolerat them just fine. Do a search and maybe you'll gather enough info to help you decide whether or not you want to give the cheese a whirl!

OK I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND THIS INFO SO I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE THE OPINON OF THIS DOCOTR...HERE IT IS...

Avoid this additive. In my opinion, carrageenan is taboo for anyone with inflammatory bowel disease. Joanne Tobacman, MD, an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Iowa, is a leading researcher of this seaweed extract, used as a thickening agent in many foods, including soy milk and ice cream. "Many careful animal studies consistently demonstrate intestinal inflammation caused by carrageenan exposure. For that reason, I think it's a good idea to avoid carrageenan-containing food products," she advises. Because so many processed foods contain carrageenan, read ingredient labels carefully.

Some folks can eat just about anything. Some people might have no problem producing a tall glass of homemade soymilk, then converting it to chocolate milk by adding the following ingredients: Three teaspoons of sugar. One teaspoon of chocolate powder. Two tablespoons of Vaseline petroleum jelly. The Vaseline might produce gastric distress, and the soymilk drinkers would erroneously conclude that they are "allergic" to soy. Some people do not experience gastric discomfort caused by the Vaseline-like food additive, carrageenan. Many people do. Carrageenan is a commonly used food additive that is extracted from red seaweed by using powerful alkali solvents. These solvents would remove the tissues and skin from your hands as readily as would any acid. Carrageenan is a thickening agent. It's the vegetarian equivalent of casein, the same protein that is isolated from milk and used to thicken foods. Casein is also used to produce paints, and is the glue used to hold a label to a bottle of beer. Carrageenan is the magic ingredient used to de-ice frozen airplanes sitting on tarmacs during winter storms.

The weird thing is I drink Silk Soy Milk almost everyday and it contains Carrageenan...yet I had those 2 deli meats and I got sick...so go figure...maybe they used a high amount on the deli meats and little on the Silk Soy...who knows..it's a guessing game sometimes....=o)

Thanks!!!

but not all.. some people find it not a trigger- its a nasty one for me, I drink soy and rice milk without it even though it limits my choices.. but it causes me migraines so I have no clue what it does to my tummy seperately!

It's weird because I drink Silk Soy Milk everyday (which contains carrageenan and I'm fine ,however, I was unable to tolerate it with those 2 deli meats...perhaps the amount of carrageenan on those deli meats were high....who knows....it's a guessing game sometimes...

I am dying to have some tomatoes but aside from the IBS, I also have GERD (I've been on Nexium for 9 months and it's 95 % better, THANK GOD) but I'm still afraid to try tomatoes because before the Nexium and with my IBS, it was a big trigger for me..I wonder if cooked tomatoes are better or fresh???...Hmmm...I guess I'll have to just try it one day in a small amount after eating a plate of safe food!! =o) Thanks for the tip on the mushrooms...I love to cook grilled mushrooms with a little bit of salt and olive oil and then adding them to my chicken or fish..I'll have to remember to eat small amounts....=o)
