Is it possible if you are lactose intolerant can you also be sensitive to sugar? I have just been diagnosed with IBS and I have been changing my diet. I have been staying away from the foods that will trigger it, but what about sugar?

I have IBS-D. I've never had trouble with sugar, so long as it's in moderation and actually sugar rather than sweeteners. I can also use brown sugar. I don't know about sugar along with a lactose intolerance though.

Thanks for responding. I never use sweeteners. Don't like the taste . I do like brown sugar. I noticed today that after I ate some canalope, my stomach started not feeling well and i got that awful urge. Then I went and got a fruit smoothie. It was non dairy and i asked to not have the honey. Again stomache. How long did it take you to get adjusted to the new diet? Did you start to loose weight? I have lost 6 pounds in the last 2 weeks, just from changing everything.

And it sounds like you may be sensitive to fructose, the sugar found in fruits, and any prepared foods with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Sensitivity to fructose is something that can happen with IBS.

Granulated sugar (and brown sugar) are sucrose, which the body breaks down into glucose and fructose. Honey is fructose, sucrose, and glucose. You may want to do some research on your own of fructose levels in various foods to adapt your diet.

Thanks! This is all really helpful. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this!
