I was looking at veggie parmesan and rice parmesan "cheese" today at the health food store and read that both contain casein (which it says is derived from milk). Can we have this? or how is it that some people here eat soy parmesan?

Thanks!

Amber

Yep- Lots of the alternative cheeses do contain casein which is a milk protein. I don't tolerate it so I avoid it though I know there are others here who tolerate it OK, so it's pretty much an individual thing and a case of trial and error. If you're stable at present it might be worth giving it a try otherwise I'd wait til you are before doing so.

How can you tell if you tolerate it? What does it do to you that identifies it as a trigger food for you?

I can't seem to pinpoint specific foods.

I avoid cassein and whey includding cheeses- so all but one brand of soy parm I have at home that has neither!

Good luck!

Personally, even though I'm very sensitive to full-on dairy products, the derivatives like casein don't bother me at all. I use soy parmesan (and non-dairy creamer, incidentally) all the time without any problems. The only way you know, unfortunately, is to try it and see.
