Hi Lozza,
Relieving constipation when you have IBS is a whole approach rather than a listing of foods.
Read the helpful info for new folks at the start of this board.
There are foods that make you "go" when constipated but if you have IBS they can result in an ongoing cycle of constipation because they irritate the colon. Better to break the cycle and stick to safe IBS foods, start some regular exercise, drink plenty of water, try some yoga and relaxation techniques.
Gas and bloating are one of the hardest sypmtoms to relieve for us C ers. Often thouugh as the other symptoms are relived the gas and bloating eases too. Fennel tea is great and eating small frequent meals rather than 3 large ones helps too. I've personally found the Hypno program has helped with the bloating too. If you are interested check out the hypnotherapy forum where you'll find lots of helpful info.
All the best my fellow aussie,
Kerrie
P>S Hang in there - constispation can take up to 2 weeks to fully resolve. Ask any more questions you need answered as we are all here to help each other.

Hi Iozza, Kerri's advice is the way to go. However, if you
want a short list, coffee, prunes, honey, and boiled cane toads.

I agree that Kerri's advice is great - the whole idea with Heather's approach is to soothe the gut.

I disagree with coffee - it may make you go now, but will probably irritate the gut even more. There was a thread on Coffee and Constipation recently - you can browse through there to see what other people have to say about it.

Prunes - Good for constipation, not sure if it will worsen IBS. Pre-IBS I tended toward constipation, especially when I traveled, and prunes combined with lots of water and lots of walking (even just pacing inside) always helped me. That said, plain old constipation is not the same as IBS constipation and prunes are a fairly enthusiastic IF plus I think they contain some type of natural laxative. I'd approach them cautiously (start with 1) and only after SF.

Honey - Hmmm. I've read this elsewhere, but I don't think it's terribly strong. I'm D, have honey in my tea every morning, and never react to it.

Boiled cane toads - What on earth is this, Bob? I'm pretty sure "toad" is not in the list of safe IBS protein sources (frog, maybe - I hear it's just like chicken ).

I'm a "D" and certainly don't need any "encouragement" in that department. I dearly love them, but prunes are a KILLER for me! OMG! I had the WORST attack after a half of a small can of them things!

WATCH OUT!

Hi Sand, Yes, coffee may irritate the gut,but it's not going
to produce gas, and she just asked about the gas only. The
boiled cane toads is just a joke for the Australians.
They can't stand cane toads. Years ago the were brought into
Australia to control some weevil that eating up and destroying
crops on the east coast of Australia. Well, they proliferated
out of hand and became a *major* nuisance. In fact a favor-
ite pastime of Brisbane residents is to drive around and
run over cane toads. You wouldn't want to eat them, they
secrete some kind of low level poison in their skin as a
defensive mechanism. In fact, Aussie drug heads distill
this poison into a hallucinagetic drug. So the cane toad
remark was a joke, just a joke<laugh>. -Bob

Bev, Oh yeah for D's yes indeed, but I think the poster is a
C. By the way, the cane toad reference is just a joke for the
Aussies as I explained to a perplexed Sand. -Bob

Ok, Ok, scratch it off the list. Next thing you, someone's
going to say they got painful gas and bloating from eating
boiled cane toads.(LOL) Actually, I think it would be a lot
worse than that. Some Aussies will probably comment on that
when they wake up, as they are probably sound asleep right
now. -Bob

Boiled cane toads only bother me if I eat them first thing in the morning.

And regular tea gives me gas, but I still have a cup every now and then anyway.
