I have had IBS for 20 years-does anyone else experience left side pain that radiates to the back/kidney area; but is relieved after BM and some heat on the area? Before the BM, it feels like I can;t even tie my shoes or bend to the left side because the left side hurts -the colonoscopy showed torqued colon on the left side...I just started taking Acadia fiber, yesterday, but I have to admit fiber usually binds me up even worse. My gastro Dr. says there is nothing wrong with my colon! I am frustrated - I have had many other tests that have come back normal, upper GI, colon, ultrasound, etc. I have alot of bloating, pain, and unless I keep the stool soft; have to strain with every BM. Can you help with these questions? Thanks. Laura

Hi Laura, That pain is coming from your sigmoid colon. If that pain subsides, it's definitely not from your kidney, so you need not worry about your kidney. This pain almost always occurs with people who have a "redundant sigmoid colon",that's what is meant by a "torqued colon". I have a relatively sensa- tive sigmoid colon, but it's not redundant. Even so, I had big problems with a lot of SFS, and my new GI doc at home told me to stop the SFS, and just do up to two doses of Miralax per day. That seems to be working so far. Also, do anything you need to in order not to have to strain all the time. That has serious consequences which I found out too late. It will cause what's called,"pelvic floor descent".Fortu- nately mine's not too bad. However, it's best to avoid it alltogether. Also, Miralax will help in reducing your straining. -Bob

Laura, I am new to this board, but I too have been suffering with cronic left side pain radiating to the back. I've had all of the test that you have had (plus more). I know how you feel hearing from your doctor that there is nothing wrong with your colon. My doctor just 'casually' said to me I have a redundant colon and kept on talking about other stuff. I had to make him give me more information. Anyway......I have been taking the acacia fiber for about 6 months now and it helps a lot! Drinking tons of water and making it a habit to eat lots of soluble fiber also helps. Take the acacia as directed starting with low doses and working up to the tablespoons. Hope this helps you. allw
