I have always been a very sturdy woman, before my IBS and PTSD exploded in 1998, I at times wore a size 22 and only could imagine what it would be like to be a smaller size. I went on diets and lost down to size 12 and thought that was great.

Since 1998, I have suffered with the worst of that IBS has to offer. I felt awful and as I got smaller and found less that I could eat I was not concerned with my weight. I have even enjoyed being a smaller size. That was until I went to one of my doctors last thursday. She weighed me and said gee you lost more weight, as the last time I had weighed in I was 138, now I am a very light 116 and scared to death.

I am just learning about this IBS diet and have been in here frequently with questions to become more stable. How do I gain weight>??? How much does your bones, muscles, and organs weigh??? I am scared that I have lost too much weight. I need help quickly.

Maybe you've lost muscle weight - I know I have! I'm also struggling to maintain my weight. I'm just trying to eat more, get more calories in. Other than just feeling really light, are you experiencing other symptoms? Fatigue? What did your doctor have to say? Did she think something other than the IBS was contributing to your weightloss?

There's actually a question in the IBS Diet FAQs about how to gain weight: I need to gain weight.

I am currently having the same problem. Just this past week alone I am for some reason (partly due to IBS I guess), eating fewer than half the normal amount I would normally consume and my sleep pattern is also suffering in the same way. I'm 5 1/4ft tall and at the start of the week I weighed 102lbs. I weighed myself yesterday and was 96.5lbs and its beginning to show. My ribs have never been this visible before and I am desperatly trying to get back up. I actually have to force myself to eat otherwise I won't. My body just doesn't seem to have an on switch for hunger.

Tell me your secret! I gained weight on the program, and even though I'm stable now I just can't seem to lose it. I eat like a bird and exercise every day. Still, my body just laughs at me.

"Eating fewer than half the normal amount," eh? Nope, that ain't workin' for me. I'm doin' it, but not losing. 102 pounds? Yowza! I wasn't 102 when I was BORN!

An "on switch for hunger"? You can have MINE!

Have you tried making some of the phenomenal recipes in the Recipe Board? There are fabulous cakes and cookies that are GUARANTEED to add calories -- trust me, I KNOW -- without a lotta fat. Have you discovered soy "ice cream"? OMG, to die for.

Weigh-in for me was Thursday. Despite all my extreme efforts, I didn't lose an ounce last week! We need to talk. We could learn a lot from each other!

OH you are so funny!!! The only time I lose weight is when I have a D attack. I lost 2 lbs last week. We set up a workout room in an empty office at work, I worked out a couple of days last week and it felt great, so I'm going to try to do it at least 3 or 4 days a week. I LOVE pilates, and yoga. They already had swimsuits out at the mall yesterday! EEK!!!

Hi Bev, I am joining WW on Thursday. It's my second time and was very successful the last time. Luckily I am stable and can eat raw veggies by the boatload! Best of luck!

I'm not exactly the best at cooking and I don't have a mixer, so a lot of the recipes I can't make anyway. I actually am currently under a bit a of stress which is probably adding to my lacking an appetite (My b/f and I of 2 yrs broke up Thursday night). I'm sure that the weight is all muscle, too. I really doubt that one can lose that many lbs of fat that quickly without surgery. And as for ice cream, I hate ice cream. Soy or milk, I just think its nasty. I don't like most fattening foods. Sugar is different, though. I love sugar! However, I get so hyped up off of it (or off anything for that matter) that I just burn it all off once it hits my system.

Muscle weighs more than fat. I know I've lost a lot of muscle mass.

Hi Maria,

Yes I knew that but I forgot to check the box, and when I toggled it wanted to erase my original post. That was the only way to get it to my favorites.

Thanks to all who have answered my original post, but really this is a serious problem. My doctor did not say much about my weight loss but going from 188 to 116 is quite a big jump. She increased my medication in order to help my appetite but what kinds of things can I eat to increase it too. I have no blender, no food processor, and very little experience with cooking. I never thought I would be asking for help to gain weight but here I am.

Hey there ladies,

I've also lost weight since this last bout w/ IBS. I went from 130 to 102. I remember how scared I was to get so close to double digits. Anyway, I stay between 102 & 105 nowadays. I also have had some trouble w/ my appetite, but have found since I got off the Zantac, I think it's improving. I have more of an appetite now! I stopped taking it in Oct. & am gradually getting it back. You may want to talk to your doctor about re-evaluating your med's. I think it might help the whole appetite situation. Until then, keep eating, even small amounts, even if you don't have the urge to eat. I think you may improve once you get stable also & that may reset your appetite to normal. Good luck! HTH.

Please expand my knowledge a little bit. I am not sure what Zantac is, my prescriptions are paid and sent by the VA and they label all the medications by the pharmacutical name. It is very true, my appetite is non-existant. That is why I do not remember to eat meals.

My day consists of eating breakfast and a couple of hours later I have a snack. Then I watch the clock like a hawk until it is lunch time or I will forget to eat. I have forgotten to eat lunch and just never seem to get hungry. So missing meals is a problem.

I do thank you for your reply, with out the help from others here who understand what we all go through I am finding much comfort and peace, which encourages me to try to keep trying. Thanks to all!!!

I don't understand all these pounds that you guys use, what size are you now? size 12 is not underweight at all. I am a size 8, but then again I think your sizing is different to ours as well?

If you want to gain weight you shouldn't do it the unhealthy way by eating lots of fat and sugar. You should try to put on muscle by working out and eating lots of protein. That's what my boyfriend has done and he has put on 10kgs. Though I don't know what protein is like for IBS? He used to make protein shakes and buy protein bars from health food shops.

Btw - what does WA stand for? I keep thinking Western Australia but obviously it's not.

Can you tolerate ground flax seeds? They're high in fat and have some insoluble fiber, but also have plenty of soluble fiber to offset the fat. The result, you get plenty of extra calories. You might want to try sprinkling some on top of a safe meal and see how your body reacts. If you can handle it, you might just want to start sprinkling them on your food whenever you eat (adding them to oatmeal seems to work well, especially.)

The other thing that might work is watered down juice. Again, try it and see if it works for you, but juice is a good way to get extra calories if you just sip it all day long. It gives me D, but since you're IBS-C, maybe that'd be OK? I'm not sure.

The other thing is maybe your doctor can refer you to a nutritionist who's knowledgable about IBS (might be hard to find) to help you gain weight.

I'm sure you'll be safe as long as you keep in touch with your doctor about what you're doing. Good luck.

Zantac is a medication that helps with acid refux (heartburn). I thought I had acid reflux due to my constant nasea, but no real heartburn to speak of. Turns out my nasea is just part of my IBS. You may have another condition that has these same symptoms, but I can't remeber what it's called. Gastro something, you might want to do a search on Web MD.com.

i was underweight myself too...

it's hard to keep weight on, when most foods make you sick i eat scrambled eggs, (i can have the yolk) and sandwiches. and cereal, thats really what i live on,. on good days i can have a few fries a work (i work at a resteraunt)

but i know the frustration. i was down to 106 and i'm 5'5 my fiance now says i looked really really sick, but he didn't say anything when i was that thin becuase he didn't want me to feel bad. but seeing all my bones kinda scared him!

eating rice, if you are ok with soy, i ate alot of soy icecream, to get some calories...turkey burgers, spegetti (if tummy allows) soy protein shakes, home made smooties...

its frusterating, i can feel your pain!! i've been gaining..(again i'm pregnant, so everyone is happy with me..lol..but i think the eggs and i have hashbrowns (with little amount of oil) and some sourdough. my doc said i could eat it every day, because i needed to gain...

hope that helps??
