I'm trying to eat a little more soy. What are your favourite brands of "fake meat" & soy products & brands of tofu?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Kate, IBS-D.

I like YVES for veggie burgers/dogs and fake luch meat stuff. I especially like the veggie salami - totally fat free.

For tofu I buy a Japanese brand... don't even know what it's called - the whole label is in Japanese. But I like it because it's pre-drained so I can pretty much just pat it a bit with some paper towel and use it. Mori Nu is good too though

mori-nu is amazing. and they make lite tofu, which will probably be much easier on your system.

although maybe it's different in canadia, since in the states the mori-nu isn't packed in water, and laurel makes it sounds like up there it is.

Nope I don't think Mori-nu is packed in water here either. Sadly I can't get it my usual grocery store though. I've often seen it at Bulk Barn though... and I'm sure you could find it at any of the bigger stores, Kate.

And yep, the lite stuff is great and much easier on the tummy

Actually, they do sell it at zehrs. I used to keep it in my cupboard (Mori-Nu lite) when I was vegan. I'll pick some up for when I get my next soy inspiration--thanks. I've tried the President's Choice lowfat extra firm tofu as well & I'm okay with it if I food process it. It's pretty "tough" stuff. I think the "softer" stuff might be easier.

I tried some soy burgers and they totally agreed. I used to be totally fine with Boca burgers -- but they aren't available around here anymore. They sell all the Yves stuff
(I was thinking the other day that some "Neat-balls" might be cool with spaghetti squash & that some soy bacon or sausage might be delicious with spinach & mushrooms! They sell "Tofurky" fake-meat slices up here, too & alot of "Pete's" products. I used to love the "Pete's" soy desserts. I'm not sure on the fat content though.) I guess, if I'm fine with Boca stuff I'd probably be okay with Yves products. They used to sell these great fake tuna & fake chicken breasts (not the breaded stuff) but they don't carry that company's products anymore--it was "Mo" something or other.

So, which fake meat tastes the best? Bolgna? Turkey? Ham?
Also, re: burgers--fake beef or fake chicken?

There's a company that makes really good stir-fry fake chicken strips (fatfree, I'm sure) & also good fake chicken cutlets, but their fake beef stuff is gross. I cannot recall the name offhand.

Kate.

i think you're talking about smart deli or smart life or whatever they are. i love their coldcuts - turkey and bologna, mostly. best tasting fake cold cuts i've found. (tofurkey's pretty high fat, i think, and definitely high calorie.) i tried the fake beef stir-fry strips, though, and they were too salty, pretty gross. and if something's too salty for me, it must be very very salty. curious if the chicken's better, but i've been a bit hesitant to try.

i love this stuff - it's the only tofu i've found that doesn't taste tofu-y. and i love the consistency.

to each her own, i suppose. either that, or you're just crazy!
