i am one of those people that are really against taking any form of medication...but now i realize that sometimes there's just no choice unless you want to live a life of pain .. so anyways i just started taking "Buscopan" (Hyoscine Butylbromide)...i take it when i wake up in the morning just b4 i eat and wow what a huge difference it makes .... i am happy to also know that my doctor used to work with a gastro specialist ...so she is well informed about IBS ...
but anyways i just wanted to share that with everyone ...it has been a big help for me and maybe you too

I took Buscopan when I was in my teens (I've had IBS pretty much all my life), but only 3 a day and didn't find I got relief with it. Can it be taken long term indefinately?

Hi Michelle, Ah, but you can. Your doc just needs to write
the scrip, and you order online from Canada. My GI doc here
told me that. -Bob

the Canadian pharmacies will sell meds to foriegn customers
online so long as you have a script from a certified doctor.
Also, a lot of other foriegn countries will do that. -Bob

My doctor will never give me a prescription for anything that's not available in the US, anyway! He has a hard enough time giving me stuff that IS available in the US!! he's such a geek. I'm getting a new doc.
Have you ever tried it, Bob? The buscopan?? Is it pretty much the same thing as the Levsin?

Michelle, No I've never tried it, and no,it's very different
than Levsin, much better I think. Ninety percent of the
Canadians that have posted about say it's very effective.

I live in the UK so have had no problems getting it here, but I started taking it about 6 months ago and it really has helped. I'd consider myself an A these days and it really has helped with the painful bowel cramps/spasms, you know the ones that make you think your about to have D but its just gas!
Obviously like everything it wont suit everyone but if you've never tried it and can get hold of it give it go, after all anythings worth a try ay?

well i find i only have to take it once or twice a day.. and it only works if i take it on a empty stomach.. i still feel bad here and there..but it helps alot ... i think i have come to the realization that there will never be a magic pill out there that will take away all my pain.

Look into the hypnotherapy for IBS. Its a safe and effective treatment, although many people are not sure why you would do clinical gut directed Hypnotherapy for IBS, it is statistically the most succesful treatment to date for IBS. Mnay people reduce or stop using meds. It works on global symptoms and on some of the root issues in IBS. If you have any questions feel free to ask. It is a legitimate treatment for IBS with twenty years of reaserch it. It can really help pain and IBS as well.

"Why Consider Hypnosis Treatment for IBS?
by Olafur S. Palsson, Psy.D.

Hypnosis is only one of several approaches to treating irritable bowel syndrome and may not be the most suitable option for all patients (click here for discussion of treatment options for IBS). However, hypnosis treatment has some advantages which makes it an attractive option for many IBS sufferers with chronic and severe symptoms:

- It is one of the most successful treatment approaches for chronic IBS. The response rate to treatment is 80% and better in most published studies to date.

- The treatment often helps individuals who have failed to get improvements with other methods (see for example: Whorwell et al., 1984, 1987; Palsson et al., 1997, 2000).

- It is a uniquely comfortable form of treatment; relaxing, easy and generally enjoyable.

- It utilizes the healing power of the person's own mind, and is generally completely without negative side effects.

- The treatment sometimes results in improvement in other symptoms or problems such as migraine or tension headaches, along with the improvement in IBS symptoms.

- The beneficial effects of the treatment last long after the end of the course of treatment. According to research, individuals who improve from hypnosis treatment for IBS can generally look forward to years of reduced bowel symptoms. "

PS many of us have done this through a home program, that works for most people. You can also find info on that on the Hypnotherapy forum.

Tristan, It's constipation, diarreah(sp?), or alternating
between D and C. -Bob
