hi ibsy-
hang in there
I was in the same place that you are now about fifteen months ago, here's a thread I wrote to encourage people and to let newbies know that it's not a magic cure but it WILL come right for you, hope that this is of some help, and remember to have a heating pad/hot water bottle as close as you can at all times!

You can do it, it just might take some time.

I didn't think my gut was EVER going to stabilize, but then I tried Heather's BTC diet, and whamo - 2.5 days and I was back to normal, but my IBS wasn't terrible (well, okay, 10 times in a day is bad, but I still don't think it was as bad as some stories I've read).

And I know this can be hard, but try to relax. I know personally Stress is a HUGE trigger (second only to the evil, dreaded artificial sweetener ), and given my job, it can be extremely difficult to reduce stress.

I found keeping a food journal really helped me narrow down what was kicking my behind - almost literally.

The folks here are full of wonderful advice and support, as well.

Hope you get to feeling better.

But firstly, make sure you deal with any depression, okay? Whether it's meds, counselling or hypno that helps, get it done. I was amazed at how much better I could cope with my IBS after I started on a-d's.

And it gets easier! Your gut will take time to acclimatise and even longer to stabilise, but it is so worth it! Do not worry, you will NOT be eating white rice for the rest of your life. In fact, don't eat just sf for more than 3 days. Try out some safe recipes from the recipe index or Heather's books and get cooking.

ADBs and Heather's Cinnamon Zucchini Bread are my top tips for completely yummy comfort food that is completely safe! Don't eat onl;y them tho as you might gain too much weight like I did!

IBS-safe food is yummy and healthy. And once you've stabilised you can work out your own personal quirks and push the boundaries a bit. As long as I don't overdo it and I listen to my bod, I can have chocolate, coffee (very occasionally), some dairy (mmmm, pizza ), wholewheat bread and even little salads as treats. My diet is FAR from boring.

Just stick with the IBS diet 100% until your stable and it'll happen quicker.

Thank you! You're so right, I do need to change my attitude! I try but by the end of the day when I've eaten pure mush and still feel ill I find it kinda challenging! As long as I know I'll get there in the end, I'll cope with it! It's just frustrating and I feel like my body's given up on me! I have sf food, it's so gross! Is it normal to get worse as the day progresses? I always feel so bad in the afternoon and evenings! Thanks for your words of wisdom... I didn't think anyone would reply but about 5 did and were really helpful!

Thank you! Can't believe people replied! I feel so much better... like I will get there and like everyone's already been through what I'm going through right now! So reassuring! Thanks... I'll continue with the mush and sf foods for a while... GROSS!

Oh my God! I'm really not the only one! Feel so much better, like I'll get there eventually! Might even be able to help someone else one day myself! You've clearly had your ups and downs... thanks for sharing them - really appreciate it!

Yes, I used to get worse as the day progresses. That's not that uncommon.

Have you started a SFS? They really help.

Also, have you been tested for celiac disease and have you considered whether gluten intolerance could be a problem (this is always a possibility for people who don't get immediate relief from the diet)?

What are your symptoms?

Yeah, I've started a SFS but i have to take 8-10 twice daily before meals but they make me gag! Plus I'm tryinhg to eat a little and often so it's really awkward to know when to take them?!!!
I've been tested for both those things and i'm 'intolerant' to wheat but that's it!
I'm usually ok till around mid-afternoon. It's mainly just severe pain and bloating with a touch of nausea... could be so much worse - I'm such a baby! I'm a lot better but for the grossness of what I'm going through I want to feel on top of the world but I just don't even feel ok at the moment! Even peppermint tea or anti-spasmodic drugs don't seem to particularly help much! I've started with aloe juice... any thoughts as to it's helpfulness? I'll try anything!

Okay, if you're intolerant to wheat you have cut it out, yes?

Try changing to a powder SFS...they're alot easier to take than millions of pills! And they can have the dose spread out through the day however you like. I'm on Acacia btw.

Aloe is NOT a good idea with IBS...try searching for it in the Research Library for more info.

Sounds like gas and bloating are your main culprits (trapped gas causes awful pains, nausea, etc). Try fennel tea instead of the peppermint - it's just amazing. Make sure you get nice fresh seeds tho - some HFS sell really old dry tea that tastes yucky and doesn't do much. Not surprisingly, Heather's is very fresh! If you don't like licorice you might not like the taste but you can mix it with other teas, hold your nose, whatever - it is worth it! And you do get used to it.

Good luck. Post more if you have any q's.

I know it is so frustrating. I guess you are the big C. I tried the aloe and it seem to work for a short time. I have that my trigger food is fats, particulary stuff like cookies, cake, chocolate, cheese, etc. So right now I'm in a bad bout now with C because of all the junk I have been eating. So I'm trying to drink and have some smooth move tea. I have found the more fiber I eat the worse I get. I hope this helps alittle.
