hey honey. i'd just be polite, but direct. tell them that you can't eat ham or cheese, that it'll get you sick, and ask if they could make you something without them. if that's a problem, or if the cafeteria stuff doesn't give you a chance to ask, try talking to the school nurse to see if he or she could help you get stuff you can safely eat. good luck!

Funny you should ask this question... we did a story earlier this year about 'lunch ladies' and 9 times out of 10, they're willing to help you if you have a special dietary need. So.... just ask, chances are they'd be glad to accomodate you. Believe me, asking for a salad without ham and cheese on it will be the least frustrating thing they have to deal with in a day.

The lunches are for "hundreds of kids"? Well, obviously you're out-numbered. Make your own IBS-safe lunch. Whatever you do, don't eat that cheese and ham; it's SOOO not worth it! While it may not seem fair that you fix your own, it's better that suffering afterwards!

I agree... ask them first - it's quite possible that they'd be willing to help you out and to accomodate your dietary needs.
But if they can't, it's not worth it. Just make an IBS safe lunch at home and bring it with you!

explain it makes you sick but you would rather not pack lunches.. you may be amazed at the positive response, especially if you are nice about it and say thank you to them.. and if not... then you aren't worse then you are now and you can just pack a lunch!

I agree with others in this discussion who say to ask politely and explain that the cheese, and/or ham, etc. makes you physically ill. It probably won't be a big deal to them to leave out one or two items from a dish.
